Ugh

A deputy knocked on our door last night about midnight. Apparently the people across the street were broken into sometime during the day. Neighbors reported a suspicious guy hanging around our house during the day. You know who the suspicious guy was? Dh's douchebag friend who parks his butt ugly 70s trash pickup out front. Great. We're those neighbors.

ETA: You know what's bugging me? There's a weird judgmental thing going on in my head. People should be able to hang out where they want if they're not doing anything wrong, despite outward appearances. But on the other hand, he is totally going to be judged for how he looks in this nice neighborhood - like a ne'erdowell slob. There's some kind of conscience issue going on in my head I can't quite wrap my brain around.

Re: Ugh

  • Our dog hates "vagrants" and anyone who looks like one (which makes it hard because half of our friends are hipsters and we love Santa Cruz). He would judge you and your friend.
  • I would probably keep an eye on your H's friend if he started hanging around and I had never seen him before.  I get really nervous about that stuff b/c my house growing up was robbed, we had what I am sure was a drug dealer across the street, and we currently live across from a park where drug deals happen all the time (I'm sure).  This makes me take note of who is doing what in case anything shady does go down.  I admit I'm paranoid though and always think somebody is either casing out the neighborhood or trying to make a deal.

I don't think I'm right in doing that, but in my neighborhood it's kind of the reality, which sucks.

  • That sucks.  What did your hubby say?  Is he willing to mention to the friend that the neighbors aren't thrilled with him hanging around?
  • Wait - do the neighbors think it's DH's friend that possibly broke in since he was suspicious looking and hanging out during the day?

  • Did the breakin happen at night? I am curious as to why they woke you up in the middle of the night to tell you this.

Oh, I would have mentioned him to the cops too if I were in my neighbors' shoes. They were totally right to mention him when they were likely asked if they'd seen anyone suspicious around. What I'm annoyed about is that we have a guy whose presence screams "douchebag" in front of our house. I don't want to be those neighbors. And frankly, I don't want him hanging out here at all. Dh understands.

I'm not sure why they knocked on the door so late. The burglary happened in late afternoon (not sure when it was discovered). Dh was in the front room with the light on, so maybe the deputy saw him?

  • That's a bummer. I agree that I would probably have wondered who the new person hanging around the neighborhood was and assumed maybe they had something to do with it. Frustrating.
