Moving...

Hello ladies!  I feel like there are several recent posts on this board about moving to NC.. and I'm going to add another - hope you don't mind!

My husband just received notice that he was chosen by his company for transfer to Charlotte (from STL) to open new locations of QuikTrips (you will LOVE them!).  I am a teacher - last year was my first year, and I signed a contract in April for this next school year - of course before knowing he would be chosen!  Truthfully, my questions are:

1) Any advice/recs for areas to look into?  We're thinking renting a home (we are currently in an apt and have grown out of it) in the area... we have no friends/family in the area so we're definitely not sure of anything!

2) Can anyone explain the school system of the area? I've seen CMS - but it seems like the districts and schools are set up differently here in STL.  And, if anyone is a teacher... how certification works.  I would love to at least be a substitute teacher for the time being.. to get my foot in the door.  It's just hard to really grasp everything on the sites.

Thank you!! :-)

Re: Moving...

  • I dont have suggestions as I live up near Raleigh, but wanted to say Hi and I hope you like NC (Charlotte specifically). There are a lot of fun and great things there. It's really grown since I lived in Charlotte (we moved to the country when I was like 10).

Hope you guys have a save move!

  • Thank you NcsuPsych! :-)  We have to make the decision pretty quickly... worst part is we made an offer on our dream home here in STL because we hadn't heard anything about the job move!

I really don't know much about the area, so any insight into Charlotte is much appreciated!

  • No recommendations but I wanted to say hello and welcome to a great state!  I'm moving to CLT next month from GA but grew up in Raleigh, NC!
  • I live in Raleigh, but I'm a teacher.  NC has reciprocity with a lot of different states.  I don't see Missouri on the list, and it may also depend on where you did your actual course work.  You can contact the state BOE and see what the requirements are.  I moved here from WV and all I had to do was apply (and send copies of my WV teaching license, and I think my college transcript) and pay the fee and I was given a teaching license in NC.  The teaching job market (like in so many other places) isn't great in the Raleigh area, but I'm not sure about Charlotte.

  • Good luck with your move!  We moved to Charlotte 5 years ago from DC and love it.  There are lots of great areas to live in - where you want to focus will depend on where you're working.  Where will your husband be working?  We have always lived close to Uptown, it's convenient for our jobs and has great neighborhoods.  There are tons of condos uptown for the urban feel, but if you want to rent a house I'd suggest Dilworth, Myers Park, Elizabeth, Plaza Midwood.  Depends on your budget as well.  There are also great neighborhoods in south and north Charlotte, but I can't recommend any specifically.  And we don't have kids, so can't help with the school question.  If you need temporary living, we rented an apartment at the Ashton in South End last summer while we were between houses and they only required a minimum 4 month lease.  I lived at the Camden Dilworth when we moved here 5 years ago and loved it and the location.  Both would be great options if you want something temporary while you get the lay of the land.  If you have more info about where you'll be working I'm sure others can help with specific recommendations.
  • To my knowledge, in NC the public schools are run/based of the county they are in. I know that Charlotte schools are Mecklenburg county, but that is pretty much all I know, sorry.

    Good luck!

  • Where in Charlotte is your husband's job? There are other school systems like Mooresville and Cabarrus counties. I'm job hunting also and one thing I've found is that NC has a central school system website here and here is also a map of the counties that helped me a lot. GL.
