Hypothetical Wedding Question

If you have a ceremony at 5pm, reception from 6-9:30, followed by a beachside bonfire.  Side Note - Most guests are flying across the country, renting a car and driving 2 hours to the location.  Are you obligated to serve dinner?

Re: Hypothetical Wedding Question

  • Yes!  Or at least some heavy, heavy apps!!
  • Definitely! I'd want my guests to stay as long as possible. People would get hungry and leave I think. They could some some heavy apps like Delta said, but it would have to be more than fruit and cheese, ya know?

  • Okay, glad it's not just me.  I have a real issue with paying to fly my family across the country, renting a car, driving two hours to the Oregon coast, staying at some beach side inn, going to a 5pm ceremony on the beach (their average high temp is 65 that month), followed by an indoor reception from 6-9:30pm (with only light appetizers and drinks.)  Then a beach side bonfire (low temps are in the 40s that month.)  By the time of the wedding we'll likely have a second baby, who is not more than 3 months old and Kennedy will be 18 months.  I can't speak for Oregon, but last time I went to a northern beach town off-season there were very few options for actually eating!

  • Wow, that is pretty odd. I agree with pp (and you)- that is dinner time, so dinner should be served.  Also, a beach wedding at that time does not sound fun!  Is this something that you HAVE TO go to (like a family memeber)?

  • It would be competely inappropriate to have a wedding that during diiner time and not serve substantial food, IMO.

It's one of my "BFF's"...she was a BM in my wedding.  But no, I don't feel particularly obligated.  The wedding is Sept. 2012, and I can't commit to that.  We'll be TTC again soon, and it's likely that we have some other major changes coming.  It's just not feasible.  And I'm sure not spending the money to go all the way there, and not even get dinner.

Oh, and when I talked to her yesterday all she could talk about was the wedding, and completely ignored the fact that my response to "How are you?" was "I'm really freaking out over Kennedy's heart surgery."

Seriously?!?  I do not understand people who get so wrapped up in their weddings that they lose perspective on what's going on in other people's life.

  • As PPs have stated, it seems a bit rude to not serve dinner esp for a wedding at that time.  I could understand not having a meal for an early afternoon wedding at like 1 or so, but a 6pm reception definitely should have some kind of meal IMO.

Sorry that she showed zero concern for your issues :(
