AW/BU: June Gardening & Landscaping Update

clicky

My husband and I have worked so hard to make the landscaping look nice and get our square foot garden "up and running" this year.

Any one else have any updates?  How are your gardens doing?

Re: AW/BU: June Gardening & Landscaping Update

  • Very nice garden!  You have a lot blooming.

We are harvesting yellow squash right now.  I also have a very wild and crazy honeydew plant.  The vine is everywhere.  I guess I'll have a lot of melons though because the plant is huge.

I bought 7 perennials today at the nursery but havent planted them yet.  I felt like some of my plants needed friends LOL I cant have just 1 of something.

  • I got my garden in a few weeks late this year d/t vacation and not wanting to leave it in the hands of my MIL to take care of while we were gone, lol!  So hopefully it won't mess up my harvest for this year too much.

I've never tried melon before.  I tried pumpkins last year, and that failed miserably. I think they both got squash vine borer and bit the dust.

I saw a technique the other day for pruning/staking zucchini and squash, so I think I'm going to try that this year.  If it works, I'll be able to grow both yellow squash and zucchini in the same designated square next year.

Thanks for sharing.  I love hearing about/seeing other people's gardening adventures. I always find it hard to come home from the garden center with just a few items.

    Definitely!

My garden is hot right now. Hydrangeas are just about finished blooming, Aesclepias and Franklinia just beginning. Planted a Saucer Magnolia and a fig tree. Trying to tame the Yucca on my front yard this week, and whip my gnarly hedge back into shape. Zero mortality this year on any of my new plantings- everything is growing like mad.

  • That's great!

Our garden is planted, but I got it in late (gone too much) and now I'm trying to keep it from frying.  Usually the tomato plants (14 of them) are bigger with better roots before it gets this hot.  The squash seems to be doing well (9 plants) and I haven't even killed the watermelon yet.  The peppers are loving the heat, so I guess that's a bonus.  I'm about ready to yank out the lettuce area & just cover it for a couple months to keep weeds out until it cools again.

I was given some divided iris & lilies by my MIL this year.  I plopped them in the empty bed in front of the house bed just to see if they would grow.  Some have, some haven't, but the roses are doing awesome.  I never liked them until I lived here & now I have a couple bushes I love.

Beautiful roses!  I got my garden in late this year too.  Hopefully it still turns out okay!  I hope yours does too!
