board of trustees vs board of directors

Is there a difference? Does it matter?

We're establishing a non-profit org for the orphanage. We've just been saying "The Board" when we talk about it. When I originally wrote our plan/proposal/informative stuff, we were planning on just being under our church, so there was no board. Now I'm going back through and adding that in, but I want to be more specific/formal than just saying "the board."

Re: board of trustees vs board of directors

  • I'm not sure. At the college they are trustees. Its a non-paid volunteer position even though they have to be nominated and voted in. They are also expected to give to the college (money, lol). Not sure if that helps? Board of directors may be paid positions?

I think Pam is on the right track here. DH thinks Trustees are more for non-profit and Directors are for profit businesses like banks, etc. Here's a short article that explains the difference.

  • Awesome. That helps! We were leaning more towards trustees.
