another medical q: allergic to my wedding ring?

I sometimes get eczema really bad on my hands, but this season it has been under control with the exception for my ring finger. I started thinking maybe I was allergic to gold, so I bought a silver band and was trying that for a little while, and it is actually worse. (Although I don't seem to have a problem with necklaces.)   I am wondering if I am allergic or what could be causing my eczema symptoms just on my ring finger and the parts of the neighboring fingers that the ring touches.  It got so bad I stopped wearing my rings a couple days ago, but now I feel totally naked/weird without them on.  Has this happened to anyone?  If so, what did you do?

Re: another medical q: allergic to my wedding ring?

  • It could be that you're not drying your finger well enough after you wash your hands and the moisture that get trapped under the ring it irritating your finger. This is what happened to me when I got my class ring in high school. I started removing it when I washed my hands and drying my ring finger really well.

  • Hi!  I do not have eczema so my response may not help but have you ever had a nickel allergy before?  I developed a severe nickel allergy and after multiple dermatology consults ultimately had to trade in my original engagement ring and wedding band (white gold) for a platinum set.

I can also wear earrings and necklaces with nickel, probably because they don't have such a direct contact with my skin for a prolonged period of time.

This, exactly.  I can't wear any rings when I wash my hands, b/c even just a couple times of not removing my rings and therefore getting moisture trapped between my finger and ring is enough to cause a nasty eczema patch.  The only way mine ever healed up when that occurred was to go a few days w/o my rings and use lots of cream/Aquaphor on it.

  • That happens to me a lot too and I noticed it usually happens when I either washed my hands and didnt dry well under the ring or I was sweating a lot and my hands were sweaty.. either way.. moisture seems to do it.

  • Ditto PP's on the moisture thing.

Also an aside- more people are allergic to the composite metals (non-silver metals) blended into silver than the composite metals in gold.  Sterling silver is 92.5% silver.  14k gold is only 58.3% gold.
