Runners, run on in

Do you eat before a run?  Like, say you get up early to go for a C25K training run (day 1 over here) and you are starving.  What would you eat?  Or would you wait to eat?

I'm looking for convenience and speed.  LOL.

Shot first, questions later.

Re: Runners, run on in

  • An apple could work with some peanut butter? It has a high water content and helps you feel full. I wouldn't eat a full breakfast though. Just make sure that you have plenty of water and wait to eat the big meal later.

I am not a morning runner, so I don't really know.

  • I dont eat a whole lot before I run.  I try to eat a power bar or something like that.  I do have ever chow down after long runs.

I believe, thanks to the Army, I can't handle eating much before I run. Since I'm used to early morning PT before chow.  I do what Brandi said but only if I do 3 miles or more.  I try to eat a half hour to 45 minutes before I run, otherwise my stomach ends up upset. Honestly, it's a trial and error to figure out what works for you.

    My list

    Apple + PB
    Gluten Free Waffle + PB
    Celery + PB
    Banana + PB

You want something with a bit of protein to help you feel full. Don't focus too much on carbs because they won't absorb that quickly.

  • I usually do something like a string cheese and a piece of fruit, usually a banana.  Or a FiberPlus granola bar.  Something light enough that I don't feel sick, but if I don't eat anything I start to feel nauseated.

Agreed.  I usually either vomit or feel like I'm going to vomit after I run.  I try not to eat very much before runs or any other work outs.  My motto is "If you're not puking, you didn't work hard enough."  I usually eat an apple or banana with a spoonful of PB about an hour before a run or work out.

  • In my glorious pre-asthma days, I would eat a little yogurt before I ran in the mornings, or went to spin class, anything with a higher exertion. Did the trick for me, otherwise I got very woozy and light headed.

  • I normally eat a piece of toast with peanut/almond butter and then wait at least a half hour.  I have horrible workouts in the mornings when I don't eat, so this gets something in my stomach without eating too much.
  • I don't usually eat first, but if I'm famished and don't think I'll make the whole run I'll have some yogurt or part of a protien shake.

Yeah, the Army is why I need help in this department.

I love PB so I'm going to roll with that.  Thanks everyone!

  • I try not to eat before I run because it can make me feel nauseous. What I have found works best for me is to run on an empty stomach then as soon as I get back I drink a coconut water and eat a small handful of raw almonds then take a shower. Usually by the time I am out of the shower I am good to eat something more substantial.
