So I think we're moving in with the ILs (rambling)

They gifted us the land for our house which means we'll be sharing a driveway.  I'm excited about the house location.  His parents are wonderful.  We had discussed several months ago the possibility of moving in with his parents while we build just to ease the logistics.  My H and FIL will be building most of the house themselves so we are looking at late nights and lots of weekends.

BIL is 18 and in college so he is home for the summer but will be leaving in August.  MIL is also in school and lives there for about half the week. She will be finished in December.  They have a 5 bedroom 3.5 bath.  It looks like we will probably be in the attic which has a nice living area, bedroom, and bath.  It is pretty private for the most part. Not to mention the 800 a month we will be saving.  H mentioned ending our lease at the end of July which freaked me out because that is REALLY soon.  I think we'll probably end the lease at the end of August even though that will be back to school time for me.

It's looking like we will be there for about a year.  I'm sure it will be fine but am a little freaked now that it's becoming a reality.

  • Sounds like it is a nice setup though and just think the money you save on rent can go to building the house.

I think end of August would be better as it would make me feel pretty panic if I knew I had to move in a month.

It will be fine. Just keep telling yourself in the end you will have a house and hopefully have money saved from not paying rent.

  • You'll be fine! I have a good friend that did that for a year while they built their house, and if they could survive it (her FIL isn't the easiest to get along with) I'm sure you'll do great.

Good luck with the house! I'm sure you'll be so glad you did when it's all over! And I agree, it sounds like a pretty great setup to me!

  • you can do it! sounds like you'll have plenty of space and privacy. I think that'd be the hardest part about moving in with a family member.

just think about that $10,000 you'll be saving in rent!

  • I agree with pps, you definitely have more privacy with that living situation and the money you'll save! Awesome!
  • I could've sworn I responded to this last night......

Good luck!!!  I'm sure it won't be the easiest thing at all times, but in the end, I bet it'll be worth it.  My brother and his wife lived with my parents for awhile when they first got married, and it worked out.  I think that they found that it helped when they all sat down and had a discussion about their expectations...like, that my mom shouldn't expect to make dinner for 4 people most nights, and that they'd all do their own laundry.  I think it was hard at first for my brother and our parents not to fall into a "parent/child" situation, but once they figured out the details, it was good!

  • I can completely understand your hesitation. And to be honest I am not 100% sure I could move in with my parents or my ILs. I have been out on my own for 9 years and I have my own routine.

But, I do agree that it sounds like a good situation that you will have your own space more than just a bedroom.

I agree with Carrie to sit everyone down and figure out a situation that works best for everyone. Like the laundry and the cooking and cleaning.

I would def. get a mini fridge and put upstairs with y'all so if you did not want to go down one night you might could have some things upstairs you could eat.
