Carpet cleaning ?? for the experts

I have an old metal chair that I use as my computer desk chair.  Today when I was moving the chair to clean a blackish powder (looks like gunpowder)spilled out onto my cream colored carpet.  I tried to vacuum up what I could, but there are obvious black spots now on my carpet.  Any suggestions on how to get it up without making it worse?  Thanks.

Of course, I just had my carpets cleaned about 3 weeks ago.

Re: Carpet cleaning ?? for the experts

  • Use the crevice cleaner from the vaccuum (the long stick thing) to re-vacuum those spots.  Then use Resolve spot shot to clean any residual black marks.  The spot shot is different from the regular Resolve carpet cleaner.   I generally find the best prices at Target or Walmart for the spot shot.  It is expensive at my grocery store and they don't always have it.
  • You have probably already tried the resolve but thought I would respond anyways.  I have worked in the flooring industry for about 7 years now and I would NOT recommend using resolve.  It might temporarily get the stain out but it leaves a chemical behind that will attract dirt from your feet or shoes and the air and the spot will appear to come back over and over again.  Always try a mild hand soap and luke warm water first. If that doesn't work Heat extraction is the only recommendation for cleaning carpets and never ever use ChemDry!  You will end up with chemicals left behind on your carpets attracting dirt and it voids almost all carpet warranties.
  • The powder is probably graphite. It is used to lubricate metal parts.
  • lucky1982--thank you, very helpful

    CollegeGrrl--you're right, it's graphite
