I get that we are all overworked and tired, but people calling in sick when they are not really just compounds the issue and angers me so much.
I overheard two of my co-workers talking on Thursday (I walked into the room at the end of the convo) and the one mentioned that between work and school she felt like she needed some extra time off and felt a sick day coming on to spend the day with her husband. She called in the next day. The next day was horrible and as a result and several of my co-workers had to stay overtime.
Like I said, I understand that everyone is stressed and tired, but I feel her actions were just so selfish. And, really? If you know you're going to call in because you just want a day off, don't talk about it in front of the people that it will screw over.
This is the same lady who asked me to take a shift for her and I couldn't (was already working) so she just called in that day. Coincidence?
I just needed to get that off my chest. Please tell me all about your horrible co-workers so I know it's not just me.
Re: Work people vent
Well, I confess that I'll call in sick when I'm not in the traditional sense--I call it a mental health day, and I think it's as important as a recovery day from the flu. I don't, however, advertise it.
But I do think it's wise to take a day when you've reached a breaking point.
That being said, this woman does sound like a crappy coworker. It sounds like she's in open contempt of the place, so hopefully she's looking to leave. When you're that loud and obvious, it's clear you want out, I'd say.
My coworker rant: the VP continues to be an ass to me because I'm leaving. He's big on loyalty but treats us all like peons. Then we get a new job, and now we're traitors. I can't wait until Thursday 5pm.
I can kind of understand the whole 'mental health day' but I guess where it's different is the line of work I'm in.
There is no one to call in to cover and none of the work can put off until the next day. All pharmacy orders must be processed through the computer system before nursing can take the meds out of the pyxis machines on the floor. I'm responsible for dosing the anticoagulation and IV feeds for the patients on my floors. All on top of making sure all dosing is appropriate and there are no drug interactions.
I'm not trying to imply that my work is more important than anyone else's but it's just that it's a different kind of work. In other settings, sometimes a project can be put off until the next day (if it's something ongoing, or lower on the priority level) but unfortunately we can't do that in my line of work or patient safety is compromised.
My main issue with her is that she is vocal ahead of time about when she will call in. She should just keep her mouth shut, then I won't know and can't be angry/frustrated with her!
I do take a mental health day every now and then but I do make sure it's a day when no one's depending on me for something. And yeah, I don't advertise it!
My biggest complaint right now is my summer student. I keep trying to give him chances but he is just NOT cutting it. I don't want to get into details but he just doesn't seem to have any motivation or creativity.

Sucky! You should totally let him know, if you haven't already.
I also do mental health days, but we have a system in place for our absences, so I guess it's easier.
For me, the worst thing about my coworkers is all the talking behind each others' backs. They're nice to your face, but a lot of them with *** and moan the minute you're out of sight.

That happens at my work. It can very challenging to find people to cover your shift, but at the same time my job is very high stressed so people need days off.

This bothers me too. There is so much *** talk about how other people handle the kids or a situation. It would be so much easier if everybody just supported one another and backed each other up. If some messed up, the know, they don't need you judging them.
