Itchy dog followup...

I can't remember who I was talking about this with.. but our dog has mega skin issues esp this time of year. he has been on prednisone, but last year we tried an oil from three dog bakery and his hair grew back and he has been doing really well without the meds.  I know I said I would let the person know if I found the oil online..

I DID!

It is Omegaderm and we ordered it off of Amazon from Revival Animal Health -it just came in the mail and it was the right stuff!

just wanted to followup!

  • I'm not the person you were initially talking to about this, but I'm interested in hearing what happened with your dog.  One of our dogs has had some major allergies recently.  Or at least that is what the vet thinks.  She has scratched pretty much her entire belly raw and all of the hair is gone now.  She finally got on a medication that seems to be helping.  Was your dog's issue allergy related?

That's awesome!  My dog takes a fish oil type supplement for his allergies and he hasn't been on any steroids or antibiotics for his skin in YEARS.  It's amazing really.  We have had some heavy duty allergy testing on him and turns out he doesn't have food allergies like we thought.  His biggest allergens are cats and... wait for it... COTTON!  Yep.  Crazy.

  • that might have been me!  we ended up taking our dog to a vet here so we could get our prednisone refill.  They gave it to us but wanted us to buy a $80 bag of food to see if he has a food allergy (which he clearly said is very doubtful, but would rule it out). We denied doing that at the time and wanted to do our own research. I was hoping to get to the bakery to get the oil recommended. I just haven't had a chance to yet. I'll keep that in mind if I can't get it there.  Thanks!

We found out we also have persistant ear infections too.  It's a good thing we love our pooch so much! He definately costs us a fortune :)

Ear infections can definitely be a sign of food allergies!  If you don't want to get the prescription food from the vet, you can find appropriate foods over the counter.  You just have to find a food that has a different protein source than the one you currently feed.  So most foods use chicken or beef as the protein.  Sometimes you can switch to lamp and be fine.  The best bet, though, is duck, venison, or rabbit.  Something that your dog, for sure, has never had before.  You may have to do a little hunting to find a food but they are out there.  Also, keep in mind, it can take 6-8 weeks of being on that food exclusively (no other treats or table scraps at all!) to know if it will work or not.  Good luck!

  • We have had two dogs that have been allergic to wheat. They lose their hair and one of them actually bites his skin raw.

We have them on wheat free food (Diamond brand, 22.99 for 40lbs from K-9 in Warren)  and in the event of a flare up (our neighbor likes to feed our dog bread!) we give him benedryl.

The allergy was so bad at one point that his stomach filled with gas causing pressure on his spinal cord and making his back legs temp. paralyzed

he just has super sensitive skin around this time every year. His back end is just so sensitive and he itches like a crazy man. it got so bad he was losing hair on his back end. We started him on meds b/c literally he was so uncomfortable. The meds affect his livers eventually, so I was concerned but it was about him having a good quality of life now. We bought that oil to try to when we were at three dog and seriously it changed everything. we slowly took him off the meds and just used the oil.. his hair grew back and he is super healthy right now.

  • Our dog has allergies during the spring and summer.  He rubs his face all over the carpet, scratches his ears and licks his paws.  We gave him benadryl per the vet and it didn't seem to work.  Last month he was given a shot and it worked for only a month.  I am wondering if this would help him?  Sounds like it would.

What type of shampoo do you girls use for doggie baths?  I have tried several and all seem to irritate his skin.
