Oh Bugger.

Long story short, I thought my STD which is my "maternity" leave covered me at 60% pay for 12 weeks. Turns out it is for UP TO 12 weeks based on medical necessity. But the first week I am out is not covered (I am taking 3 days PTO and 2 days unpaid), and once coverage kicks in after the first week, well, I only get 5 weeks. FML. So this totals 6 weeks.

So, I can take vacation time to extend it- I am only going to take 7 more vacation days though, because I want to have time at the end of the year when I go back to work to take off some Fridays, etc. So now we are up to 7.5 weeks- this way I am only getting  4-4.5 weeks unpaid. It just sucks. I mean, we can do it I suppose but it's just not exactly what we planned for.

Luckily, the university MH works at is covering his 2 week leave, so that will offset some of this, considering we thought he wouldn't be getting paid for it.

Just frustrated...

Re: Oh Bugger.

  • That really stinks, at least J gets paid leave for two weeks, so that's good.
  • Oh no! I'm sorry :( Your HR person should have explained that to you better! But, ya, US maternity leave sucks! At least you can make it work though, so you can still spend your planned 12 weeks with Ava!

  • I had to cut my maternity leave short because of unpaid leave. We made it, but it sucked. At least it'll work out [for the most part], though - and that J will get paid!

  • Oh man that bites! Is there any way your doctor could write you a note? Maybe you're still having blood pressure issues -hint hint*wink wink*?
  • That sucks to plan for 12 and then find out you're only getting HALF of that.

What about working from home for week 7 and having J take that week off and stay home with you and Ava. That way you're both there and you can get some work done with her in the house?

That's what Greg and I are doing. I'm taking 4 weeks off and he's taking week 1 and week 5 off to be home with us.

I really am already kind of gung ho on not going back too early.

I probably could work out a thing where starting week 9 I work from home a week, Justin WFH week 10, etc...we'll see. It just is stupid!

  • I had similar confusion with my STD too.  I thought that I got six weeks paid in addition to my PTO.  They made me use up my PTO and then STD only paid for 1 week. Most of my leave was taken unpaid.

  • That sucks that it's not what you've been planning on. But, well...it could be worse...

when I worked at the ob, we never extended is unless it was medically neccessary.

they ask the doctors for excessive notes, contraindications, diagnoses - its really a pain in the @ss.

people would say, I can take 12 weeks, to which we would say " we are giving you 6vag/8csec - nothing more, nothing less "

a lot of people went back early for the money.
