OBX rentals and advice, please?

We're considering renting a place in the Outer Banks in August or September.  Why OBX?  Because we've never been, we don't want to fly anywhere and we're bringing our dog.  The thing is, it is just DH, myself and the dog and everything I'm finding has room for way more people. We're fine with that, but don't want to pay for more than we need. Any recommendations?

Also, are we crazy for going in late August - early-mid-September?  Should we be worried about hurricane season ruining our vacation?  Is it crazy hot?  Unfortunately July isn't an option.

Any recommendations for towns, rentals/sites, restaurants, things to do, etc. are most welcome! I've already been on vrbo and homeaway.

Thanks!

Re: OBX rentals and advice, please?

  • We went to OBX for the first time the summer before last for the same reasons you mentioned and found the same issues.  Many condos that were the right size for us didn't allow the dog, so we ended up going with a house in Duck called The Blue Dolphin.  The house was great, only a few steps from the beach and in great condition.  We went the last week in August through the first few days of September - I think it was the week school started so the price was lower but we figured it would still be plenty hot.

Unfortunately, it rained just about the entire time and was so chilly and windy that I had to go buy a sweatshirt that I wore almost every day :(  I think there was a hurricane offshore, so it probably wouldn't be like that all the time and that's the chance we took.  But, compared to other beach places we've been like Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head or even Ocean City, we felt like OBX didn't have anything to do in poor weather.  We've debated going again and I think we'd opt to go to one of the SC beaches instead, just because there is more to do if the weather isn't good.

  • We were just there the beginning of June and it was nice because most of the schools weren't out yet so it wasn't really crowded.  We stayed in Corolla, and rented a house through kittydunes.com: if you go through the advanced search you can select how many bedrooms and specify you want pet-friendly.  I'm pretty sure you can get vacation insurance and if there's a hurricane you can cancel.

We had great weather, but I can see if there's a lot of rain that you can run out of indoor things to do.  We took DS to the aquarium in Manteo the one day the weather was crappy, and there's a small movie theater up in Corolla that does extra screenings on rainy days.

  • When it was just DH and I, we rented from Nags Head Realty.  The condo was the Coastal Retreat #102 "Misty."   I was a 2 BR, 2 BA condo with great beach access.   We were able to bring our dog and the price was great.  The last year we were in that condo was 2008.  At that time, they put in new carpet .  It was always really clean, very convenient, and cheap!   I'm not sure how/if it has changed over the last couple of years but it was perfect for us.

We normally went the first or second week in September and the weather was still hot but comfortable.  We never had any issues with hurricanes.
