New Army Wife!

Hi! I'm a newlywed & new to Army life. We are currently discussing options of where we want to be stationed next, and I'm lost! We are thinking Hawaii & Fort Hood right now. Any advice on favorite places to be stationed? Thanks! :)

Re: New Army Wife!

  • Welcome to the board.  Did your DH enlist recently?

I almost got stationed in Hawaii, and then paperwork happened and the next thing you know I got sent to Georgia (not the same).  Good luck, if you get it I will be jealous.  :)

    Shot first, questions later.
  • i've actually hear hawaii is kinda like a trap. it sounds good on paper, and obviously it's the beach, but housing is really expensive over there. i heard the cost of living is just ridiculous and makes people not like it. but of course, i've never been and it's all just what i've heard.

also, isn't ft. hood in the middle of nowhere texas?

  • Welcome to Army life and congrats on your marriage! :)

We (used loosely since DH is deployed right now) are in Hawaii right now! :) I like it quite a bit. The cost of living is high, but BAH and COLA do a pretty good job at offsetting the higher costs and as long as you plan and shop on post, you can stay on budget most of the time! The only thing I really hate about it here is the mosquitoes because I get bit ALL the time, I'm like a mosquito magnet :P Of course it takes a little getting used to, but overall I like it here!

Also, if you already have pets, look up the quarantine rules as soon as you get orders! There is a pretty lengthy process to get them into the state b/c Hawaii is rabies free and you don't want to have to pay for them to kennel your pet for the 120 day quarantine if you don't get all the paperwork and shots done right.

Have fun and just remember that all your plans will be as solid as jello as long as your H is in the Army. Just plan for things to change even when you think they are definite and you will save yourself some headaches and frustration! :)

  • Yeah, housing is expensive in HI, but BAH is proportionately high.  Seriously, my BAH here is higher than my last salaried job.  Now, that wouldn't be the case for a new enlistee, but apparently base housing is decent here (I haven't seen it).

Also, we get COLA (which is a few hundred each mont).  Yes, things are expensive, but that's what COLA is for.  There are also a few commissaries and costcos, and that helps bring prices into a normal range.

Anywhere in Texas would be about lowest on my list, and Hawaii was at the top, so obviously I'm biased. I would also never make any serious decision about joining based on location since we've had so many plans change last minute, like changing countries last minute.

Yes. I can't imagine anyone from out of state choosing to be stationed there. I guess we wouldn't mind because we're from Texas so it would mean we'd be within driving distance of family but still...Killeen is a crap hole.

Although, Austin (the coolest city in Texas IMO) is just a little over an hour away so I guess that could have some appeal.

  • mikate81410:

Thanks so much! I am so happy to hear from someone that is stationed in Hawaii!

It is really my number one choice, but I am just concerned about being so far away from family/friends- especially if my husband deploys while we are there! How are you coping it? I have never been through one before, so it makes me crazy to even think about!

Also, about the pets, we got a kitten a few months back, and took her to the Vet on post. They were great about giving him shots that fit every country's rules! :)

    Thanks! :)

I'm in Georgia right now, HA! I lived in Florida my whole life, and just moved here when I got married. Definitely not the same!

    Are you in the Army?

  • Welcome! I'm Marni and I'm an Army wife as well. We are currently living in Northern Virginia, which, IMO, is one of the better Army options. Unlike the Navy, which tends to be on the coasts, Army posts tend to be in the middle of nowhere. Our first PCS right after getting married was to Fort Irwin, CA. I made some great friend's there, and despite it's remote location (it's 40 miles to the nearest town, which is, again MPO, an overgrown truck stop, and 75 miles to the nearest bigger town), I miss living there. But, it's not for everyone, that's a given.

Good luck with orders and your DH's next duty station.

  • Welcome!  H is in the army as well.  We won't know the next duty station for awhile.
  • Welcome. I'm Sunny, DH is AD Army and we're also in GA. We're getting ready to PCS to either Fort Sill or Fort Benning though. I haven't been to Hood or Hawaii, I'd rather go to Hood if I had to choose though. Anyway, good luck on where ever you end up and congrats on getting married!

  • Congratulations on your marriage and welcome to the military! In making decisions such as where you will be stationed it is important to consider your support system and your financial goals, prioritizing what is important to you. If you are close with your family and see them often, consider how expensive travel will be from Hawaii to the states (especially on holidays). Although, your families will have quite the vacation spot and will most likely be wanting to come see you instead :) Consider the pros and cons of each location and make an educated decision, ensuring that you both are on the "same page". Good luck on your decision making and once again, congratulations. Being a military wife is not easy, enjoy and appreciate the time you have together.
