Washer and Dryer recs???

So, I think I'm giong to have to bite the bullet and get a new w/d.  My washer keeps getting stuck on the spin cycle and it IS about 15 yrs old. ha!  So, I've seen so many negative posts on front loaders.  I like that they're higher and more ergonomic, but really worried about the mildew smell. Both my husband and I are clean freaks, so I'm wondering if it will be too much work trying to keep it clean.  Are there any others out there that will last us and have great reviews?  I'm not completely against the front loaders, but looking for options and over all reviews.... Please give me your experiences.  Also, is buying the HE detergent a pain?

thank you!!

Re: Washer and Dryer recs???

  • I don't have front loaders, but the Purex I just bought said it's for "all washers, including HE"

I have been using this brand for years, because it is cheap.

I will definitely get a front loader when my current washer craps out, because I need something bigger for our king sized comforter.

  • We've had our front loader since fall 2007 and have never once had any mold, mildew or unpleasant smell (despite my husband closing the door more than occasionally).  We do wipe the door and gasket down occasionally (w/just a rag), but not every time.  Also we didn't get the thing that goes under it, so i wouldn't call it ergonomic, but it's not a problem.  Our dryer doesn't match, but works fine :)

Our detergent comes from trader joes, so no, not a hassle.

Despite liking it, i couldn't tell you the make or model...

  • Ditto PP's.  We leave our door open after every load, and wipe down the gasket every once in a while - never had a problem.  Detergent isn't an issue, either; more and more brands are becoming available in HE.

Not sure if we got a smaller set or what, but we didn't feel comfortable putting a king comforter in ours.  Before we got duvets, we still took our comforter to the dry cleaner to be washed.  We could stuff it in the washer, but I highly doubt it all would have gotten clean.

  • I have a front loader at our summer home and hate it. When it was time to replace w/d at our primary home, we went with the Whirlpool Cabrio. I like this machine much better. I like the agitorless bin so I can wash king size comforters or large loads with no issues. No stinky odor in this toploader.

There are a lot of brands of HE detergent, so don't know why it would be a pain to buy. I just stock up when it goes on sale.
