S/O Obese Children

I really have a problem with parents letting their children get Venti Frappuccinos. Kids don't need that much sugar or espresso.

Re: S/O Obese Children

  • Agreed.

When I worked at Starbucks, I saw a 4ish y/o throw a massive tantrum because her daddy wouldn't give her a sip of his mocha yet... because it was too hot. Indifferent

  • Agreed. My parents would let me or my brother "taste" their coffee on occasion. Sometimes they would fix us a tiny cup of coffee but it was mostly milk with a splash of coffee. I can't see future me going to Starbucks and letting my child have a coffee or even a frap of their own.

  • Seriously... the amount of calories, fat, and sugar in a venti frappuccino... NO one should be drinking them, let alone children!

My stupid Aunt let's my 14 yr. old cousin with ADD drink as much Diet Mt. Dew as he wants (like, 6-8 cans a day) and argues that there's no sugar, so it's okay. Um, there's caffeine, you idiot! A child with severe ADD doesn't need all of that caffeine, especially since he sits around playing video games all day and doesn't do anything outside to burn energy. Ugh. Idiots!

My therapist in HS told me that those with ADD tend to self-medicate with extreme amounts of caffeine. I know that I do. Caffeine actually calms me down & helps me focus as opposed to jacking me up.

In his defense, the caffeine is making him focus... just on his video games & not on something productive.

Does it not interfere with his medications though? I know he's on several, just don't know what.

It may depend on what he's on. Based on the media, it appears as though they're trying to get away from stimulant based drugs for ADD/ADHD treatement.

But, I never had a problem consuming caffeine & Adderall..

According to Google, no interactions known between Adderall & Caffeine: http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/adderall-with-caffeine-190-1645-450-0.html

ETA: & back when I was on Adderall, my Diet Coke consumption was comparable to your cousin's consumption of Diet Mt. Dew.

  • I don't think kids need coffee. I didn't taste it until college. My CW gives her two year old cold coffee in his bottle every morning. She wonders why he has 4 cavities already.

  • I don't understand why coffee is not ok but 6-8 cans of soda, diet or not, are.
  • I'm not ok with coffee, tea, soda or even large consumptions of juice. Children do not need all of this junk that some parents have readily available.

I never said it WAS okay. Either way, its still bad. Children shouldn't be loaded up on caffeine at all.

Just explaining my experience with using caffeine to self-medicate.

ETA: I never given caffeine as a child. I didn't start drinking it until I had access to it outside of my parents' home (school, friends houses, etc).

Ashlee, I think this actually explains how caffeine affects me quite well:

I've always felt like caffeine had a reverse effect on me. I can drink a caffeinated beverage & go right to sleep. It calms me down. My old therapist told me that's one of the strongest signs of someone with ADD/ADHD as opposed to just an unruly child who needs discipline.

I was actually just about to post that I don't think caffeine is ok, at least not until a certain age. Caffeine is a drug. You get addicted to it. Don't get me wrong. I'm not some anti-caffeine person. I love my Dr Pepper. I have tried to quit drinking soda multiple times and I succeed for a while and always start it back up. But I always feel better when I'm off of caffeine completely. Plus the caffeine gets replaced by water, which is even better. I just don't get why I would give my little kid something that he is going to have to try to quit eventually.

I'm not saying never. I'm just saying it certainly shouldn't be put in a bottle or sippy cup (that's too young IMO) and they shouldn't be drinking 5 a day.

  • Caffeine in soda or tea does the same to me as it does to CD. Finding an ADHD drug to help me when I was young was a chore, because I was either jumping out of my skin or a zombie, so I self medicated with coke(soda) most of the time. As an adult I've limited myself to one or two diet comes a day, but I can never fully give it up. That said, I didn't have coffee until I was 23 and before that a frap every now and then since I worked as a barista. I can't drink more than one cup of coffee a day because the caffeine in it will hop me up like I'm on speed until it's out of my system. I wouldn't give my kid a frap until they were older, not just for the caffeine, but for the sugar and calories too.

  • I don't think that soda, tea, etc is okay for a child either. When I was a kid I could drink tea but soda was a treat. H and I don't drink much caffiene now and it will be like that when we have kids. Once the child is old enough, whatever age that may be, they can have a small amount of soda or tea as a treat just like DH and I. We drink a lot of water and I intend my future children to do the same. We'll see how that goes.

  • I don't think any kind of coffee or soda is okay for a child.  B drinks his "coffee" with us on weekends - he has his own little k-cups for the keurig, it's hot chocolate instead of coffee though.  He's never had soda either.  He will occasionally ask for a sip of my tea when we're out to dinner, but typically he's perfectly content with his water or milk.
