Crib question

Mr.D's aunt organizes her church rummage sale and someone she knows donated a crib.  She offered it to me free of charge.

So of course I ask for the model number so I can google any recalls.  It's an Evenflo Jenny Lind crib and it has been recalled because it is a drop side crib.  Evenflo is offering a free repair kit to immobilize the drop side that I can still order.

Would you still take the crib even though it was recalled as long as the repair kit was secured properly?

Re: Crib question

  • My first instinct is no, but if it's absolutely free and you get the repair kit free, what's the harm of trying it out?  You're early enough along that if you decide you don't like it, you can always purchase a new one.
  • Yes.  I took a free crib that had been recalled.  We got the kit, secured the latches on it and have been using it for the past 19 months.  My son is huge too and we have had no problems.

  • I wouldn't but that's just me. I am sure it's perfectly safe, but with all the new restrictions on cribs i would still be nervous.

Ditto.  I'm sure it would be safe but I'd always be nervous in the back of my mind about it so for peace of mind I wouldn't use it.

  • I agree with Shannon and lachute.  I'm all about hand me downs and reusing things, but a crib is one of those things I would just prefer new.  They are always changing crib guidelines.  They just came out with  new ones yesterday.  Car seats and cribs are two of the only gear things I would want new.

However, maybe it would be good for a  grandparents house?

    Ditto this exactly.

I think that's what it is - in the back of my mind, I'd always be thinking about it.

  • Can you just do all of the baby research about a month of ahead of me? kthx.

  • Nope. Wouldn't even take it to grandmas. It's no safer there then it is in your home. You can get a pnp for grandmas house. Ps I looked at rum's and Amy# registries when registering, if any of the pregnant ladies want to look at mine lmk. It was super helpful.

  • Also, places like thriftnshops and goodwill aren't supposed to sell used cribs or car seats due to recall and safety issues.

Sure, I'll make you a list.  And then I'll just have them duplicate my registry for you!  I draw the line at writing thank you notes, though.

Um, bc companies are not even allowed to sell drop side cribs anymore bc they can be dangerous. That's why.

I'm just gonna throw this out there.  My cousin was in a drop side crib about 25 years ago when they were very popular and tons of people used them.  His drop side went down one morning while he was playing in the crib right after he woke up and his umm...manhood got trapped in between the drop side rail and the crib mattress.  Luckily all his parts are in tact but after I heard that I could never use one no matter how many people have used them without incident (including my mom who had me in one).
