White Rock Creek & Lake Trails

Does anyone have any experience running this/these trails?  I live off Royal (just moved), close to where this trail begins, but I know some of the neighborhoods around me can be somewhat shady (crime-wise) so I'm wondering about the potential safety issues of this trail.  I wouldn't be close to the lake when running, so I don't think it would be as crowded.  Also, I'd probably run it early (around 5:30am or so) so it's likely to still be somewhat dark as well.

Any input is greatly appreciated, TIA!

Re: White Rock Creek & Lake Trails

  • I'm not familiar with the trails, but the Dallas PD's website has an area where you can search crime reports by area.  You can filter to only show certain types of crimes - ie, you wouldn't be concerned with vandalism or burglary, but you would be interested in robberies.  It's kind of cumbersome to look through all of it and sort out what is relevant, but I did that before buying a house and it was really helpful and put my mind at ease about where we ended up buying... I think you'd be able to get some peace of mind about running there as well from using the site.  Good luck!
  • I go running at the park at Greenville and Royal (which is what I think you're talking about) with my FI from time to time, and we've never encountered anyone or anything shady.  There are a TON of cyclists and not a lot of lights, though, so you might want to wear bright or reflective clothing.

I grew up in a neighborhood right off that trail (the floodplain and park right under Abrams rd).  We always rode bikes, walked, and jogged up and down that path and never had any issues.  As with any path, you need to be alert to your surroundings, but it never has been any above average crime issues.  It will not be as crowded as the lake, and there is plenty of access on/off as it runs by many major roads.

  • Thanks so much for all the input!  I can't wait to get out there and hit the pavement :)
