Advice needed - Traffic to VA Beach for July 4th

We are heading to VA Beach for the July 4th weekend, and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice over which days/times it would be best to travel there. I have no idea when people in this area would start to head out. Our plan right now is to leave around 9 or 10am Friday morning - I know Friday traffic usually gets bad out of the mixing bowl and on 95 around 1pm, but I'm worried people will leave earlier for the holiday weekend. DH thinks people will leave Saturday instead and stay through Monday. (We are coming home Sunday lunchtime).

I'm afraid 64 is going to be bad all day long on Friday though, with people from Richmond heading out on Friday. We are toying with leaving Thursday night around 7pm. I really don't like arriving so late at night, but it's better than sitting in 6 hours of traffic.

 Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • When we head southeast, we go 301 to 17.  It takes a bit longer, but it's not 95 or 64.  Something to consider.
  • I would leave at night or early morning and take route 1, 17 and then at some point 64...hubby went to Hampton so he knows how to get down there with no issues...

  • If you take 1 to 17, you can also take route 60 east to avoid the traffic on 64. Sunday afternoon traffic is the worst. I'd leave late Sunday afternoon if at all possible.

  • I would go as pp have said, 1 to 17. 95 is the worst. A few years ago I went down w/o DH with the girls we left Saturday morning and it took us 5.5hrs to get down there! i started on 95 but finally got off and got on 17 to try and avoid some of it.

Can you leave Thursday night at all? We normally leave late at night or first thing in the am. 9 or 10 on Friday may be too late. We're out the door by 6 if we leave in the morning on a holiday weekend.

  • If you leave Friday morning, you should be OK on 95.  Rt 1 isn't going to help, since it's all lights.  No fun at any time.  301 (on the other side of the river) is how we get south.  No lights except for a few through Waldorf, then in Tappahanock.

You aren't going to avoid traffic, it's just picking when you might have it the least bad.

  • Thanks so much for all the advice!!

I guess my big concern at this point is 64 towards VA Beach. If we leave super early Friday, like 6am, I wonder if 64 would be reasonable by the time we hit it?

We are heading south on 95 on Saturday for a NC beach, and I know it will be bad.  We are going to try to leave super early to avoid some traffic but I expect it will be a long ride until Richmond and then it tends to thin out after the VA beach exit.
  • Another way I get to 64 is to head down 29 to Route 3 and then take Route 522 to Route 64 and drive through Richmond. It's longer, but it's a pretty drive. The only traffic I usually hit is around Lake Anna.
