F/U: Prenatals

Ok So I started taking the Rainbow Lites brand a few months ago since we are going to TTC in late March after my sister's wedding.  Do I start taking the DHA now or wait until we are ready?

Re: F/U: Prenatals

  • I honestly have no idea, but I don't think it would hurt to start taking it now...

Target has their house brand that's the same as Expecta (I think that's what it's called).  It's only like $8 for a month supply.

  • I would start taking both now, personally. It's not going to hurt you and finding out which types of vitamins don't disturb your stomach now before you have something else disturbing your stomach is a good idea in my mind.

  • Ok because I love the Rainbow Lite ones....never had a problem and I have a history of stomach problems so it is iffy.  Will start looking into DHA

Me too. I take the Rainbow Light prenatals and I didn't know I needed to take something else. So I am also *listening*

  • It's basically an Omega fatty acid.  There are several benefits to it in general, but it is especially good for pregnant and nursing women as well as babies and young children.

  • DHA is good for eye and brain health. I would start taking it now, because by the time you realize you are pregnant, a few weeks will already have passed. My Obgyn also said it is more important to take the vitamins before pregnancy then during though. I don't know why?

I feel bad because I was taking the prenatals and DHA semi-regularly (never good at remembering to take pills) and then my douchey obgyn told us we shouldn't try to get prego yet since he thought I was fat and should lose 30lbs first. I was bummed and stopped taking the vitamins and found out a month and a half later I was prego Indifferent I hope my body had what the baby needed. At least I found out early, at like 3 weeks and started taking them again right away.

  • Mostly they want you to take it early because the folic acid has been linked to lower neural tube defects and taking prenatals has also been linked to decreased morning sickness/nausea. Plus its just a good idea to be taking at least a multivitamin even if it isn't a prenatal.

What she said is why you take them early. A post on the bump has this information in it. Sorry no link. Also you want to be prepared and have all those nutrients and vitamens inside you as soon as possible to give your baby a good start.
