Can we live without a coffee table?

Jess's fab pictures below got me thinking about my cluttered mess of a house.  One of the many things that makes her's look so big is the lack of a coffee table.  Interesting.

Now that the boys are starting to walk, we don't have as much room for them to move around as I'd like.  (Playing in another room or the basement isn't really an option.) A huge chunk of real estate in our family room is taken up by our massive coffee table.

It's your classic "stores a bunch of useless crap above and below that we haven't touched in years".  I do eat at it during non-table dinner nights, but most of the time it's just used to house magazines and junk that needs to be covered up by a blanket so the babies don't tear it apart.

So, does anyone not have a coffee table?  Do you miss it?  Where do you put your feet?  Maybe the next time DH goes to the lake, I'll just get rid of it and see if he notices?

Re: Can we live without a coffee table?

  • We ditched ours a long time ago. Best thing ever! We couldn't put anything on it because C was immediately pulling everything off onto the floor anyways :)

  • No coffee table here.  My feet go on the ottoman.  :)  I can't remember if we ever had one upstairs....we used to down in the 'man cave' but now that I'm thinking about it, I think that one is gone too.....so obviously I haven't missed it being there if I can't even remember if we still have it!  ;)
  • SIL has two under the age of three and ditched hers a few years ago for the same reasons...
  • I want to get rid of ours sooo bad but DH refuses. I'm hoping that in the next year or whenever we move we can sell it. I didn't grow up with one so not sure why we even bought one with our furniture but all it does is collect crap. Magazines, mail, etc. And if we don't eat at the table we use this. It is nice for that or being able to put a drink on but we also have end tables.
  • We obviously don't have one.  We do have a small ottoman that we used to put by the couch in the evenings to put our feet on (just one of those cube ones -- we'd move it to a corner during the day).

Back in the day I had one at the house I rented and it was just a crap collector.  Old mail, magazines, receipts and just general clutter got thrown there.

  • Don't have one and won't buy one, all it ever did was be a catch all of clutter.  I have 1 ottoman upstairs and 2 for the basement.
  • Could you do something that's more like an ottoman?  Then it might not become such a storage spot, and could be moved out of the way when needed or used as extra seating.

We have one that's just a bit shorter than the length of our couch.  It's stays empty with the occasional exception of my laptop, and is helpful for setting sippy cups for B or my dinner on in the evening when it's just us hanging in the living room.

    Here's a very old picture:

  • We got rid of ours after E started crawling because it was metal.  We haven't missed it at all upstairs, and it makes a lot more room for E to run around and play.  We did put it downstairs when we finished that area, but there's more room down there, so it doesn't seem to be in the way as much.

We have a good size ottoman that we use upstairs to put our feet on.

  • We had it out for the purpose of showing out house, but decided recently that it was just a waste of space, so it now lives in a corner of the basement. Austin loves have all that extra room to run around. I don't miss it.

  • Whenn my step sister was babysitting still one day she rearranged and moved our coffee table to use as the tv stand. H kept saying I would hate the rearrangemnt because of the lack of the coffee table but it has been the best thing ever! S has so much more room tro move around. I do want to get one of those storage ottomans To put his toys and for my feet.

  • Got rid of mine maybe 6 or 7 years ago and have never missed it. Definitely a clutter magnet.
  • We ditched ours when Berkeley was mobile.  We will never go back to having one.

  • We had one in our appartment but have never used one in this house and haven't missed it. We have so much clutter to fight as it is that if we had a table we would never win the battle.

That and there is just absolutely no way it would fit, even a super skinny one would be too big for this house and the walkthrough arrangement of the bottom floor.

  • We haven't had one until recently. We bought new furniture a few months back, and the furniture package came with one. We really like it, but we don't really want it taking up all the space in our living room. So, for now we are using it as our entertainment center or such. Our tv is wall mounted, but we use our coffee table under it to store netflix dvds, our wii and our PS3.

  • Well, I didn't realize it was such a popular thing to do. We ditched ours when B went mobile. It was glass and he was just tall enough to chew on it. Eeek! It was a disater waiting to happen. We have tiny little leather topped ottomans that we can put our feet on. Otherwise they hold diapers and such.

    thanks to jennied :)

  • We ditched ours when E started to roll.  Our living room is fairly small and this coffee table was HUGE.  All it did was collect crap.  We got one of those "leather" storage ottomans from Target. It's great to sit on, put feet up on and store E's toys.  We have it in the basement now and it's perfect. I kind of want to get one for upstairs too but we dont' spend much time there anymore.
