Iced coffee maker?

I could swear I saw a commercial recently for a Keurig-like appliance that makes iced coffee, but now I can't find it anywhere! I am obsessed with iced coffee and when I want it and I WANT. IT. NOW. I don't want to brew it and then chill it and blah blah blah.

Am I taking crazy pills or do these actually exist? I see that Keurig says you can use their regular coffee maker and brew it over ice, but does that actually work? Seems like a recipe for watered down, room temperature coffee to me.

Any yes, I've seen the Pioneer Woman's recipe for iced coffee, but that involves vats and cheesecloth. I do not want to deal with vats and cheesecloth to make coffee. That is why there are appliances. And Starbucks.

Thanks!

Re: Iced coffee maker?

  • You can do overnight iced coffee at home just using a French press. Like Pioneer Woman, but on a smaller scale and with way less effort. Here's a good how-to.

I was just going to suggest this. I read the post the other day and realized it was genius!  Now I just need to get off my lazy rear and try it that way :)

  • We have this Toddy that makes the cold brew coffee.  It's wonderful.  I too saw that machine you are talking about advertised, maybe in the Bed Bath and Beyond flyer???
  • I just saw that commercial 5 minutes ago. It's unclear if it specifically makes cold coffee (like if it has a hot or cold switch) or if you have to add ice.

I agree, I saw the commercial again as well and it says you can brew over ice.  However, I have a hard time believing that the woman has the same ice in that glass from the initial brewing, you would think it would melt.

  • Step-MIL has a Keurig, and you can brew it hot over ice, but it does melt the ice. They may have come out with a newer model with a cold setting, but the old ones don't really work for iced coffee, IMO.

The think I like about Pioneer Woman's method (not that I've tried it) vs. the French press one posted is that with her method you make a whole bunch of the base, and then have it ready whenever, whereas with the French press method you have to do it every day (I guess unless you have a really big French press).

I have seen a cold-brew maker in one of our local coffee shops, but I can't remember the brand. It didn't look like the Toddy one posted, it actually looked more like a Keurig, but it was the same concept.

  • I'm glad that other people have seen the commercial, too!

Thanks for the french press tip. It doesn't solve my problem of wanting iced coffee RIGHT THIS MINUTE, but it will be helpful. And thanks for that blog link - never heard of it and it looks like good reading!

  • Alternatively, you could make *strong* coffee & freeze it in ice cubes.  take these cubes out & put in a freezer bag to store in the freezer.  Then use the cubes to cool down hot coffee w/out diluting it.  I don't think this is as good as other ways to do iced coffee, but it's convenient!
  • we got a Kuerig as a gift and i have made iced coffee with it...some of the little cups are specifically made for "ice coffee flavor" and yes, you basically fill a cup with ice, put the coffee over it. The ice does melt so i usually just pour that cup over another full cup of ice and then put milk in it.

while it is not starbucks, it is pretty good.
