SD ladies - vacation help?
We are taking a loong weekend vacation in SD again this summer, for the comic convention @ the convention center. We'll be staying at the naval station. I was hoping the SD ladies might be able to answer some questions for me:
- is the public transportation between downtown and the naval station decent and reliable, or should we look into driving ourselves downtown and paying for parking? I ask this partially b/c we will have LO in tow, and all the gear that involves (i.e. stroller)
- any sights/shopping/attractions in the downtown area that are a must see? We didn't have time to explore downtown last year, but might take a day to do so this year.
Thanks ladies!!

Re: SD ladies - vacation help?
The only public transportation I use is the coaster/trolley, so I'm not much help there. I do think the parking areas will have price hikes during ComiCon, so I don't think that's a better deal.
As far as downtown, I don't have any advice for gaslamp with a LO.
I'm useless, but I hated not to reply since I live here, lol. I'll ask my fancy SD sister to come post.
Everything is more expensive and more crowded during ComiCon (which is annoying for me personally because it's Man's bday weekend). Parking lots around the area are expensive all the time, but I don't know much about public transportation between the base(s) and downtown. My guess would be that 32nd street has a bus/trolley that can get you from one to the other rather easily. The rest of the bases (Sub, North Island) probably don't have great public transportation - the city does not.
Downtown with a LO - there's the New Childrens Museum which I loved as a child (though it was the old Children's Museum) and Petco Park (though I don't know the game schedule) which is fun depending on age of course. There's a park at the park where kids can play baseball, or in the sand box (those are $12 tix instead of $5 though) which is super fun for them. Seaport Village which is walking distance from the Convention Center has Buskers on the weekends that can be really fun - magicians, random guys standing rocks on their sides, face painting, etc. It's totally touristy but still fun. Otherwise, the Gaslamp really isn't the most child friendly area - clubs, etc. Restaurant wise it depends on what you all like. I have recommendations, but as I don't have LOs I can't say if they have kid food or whatever.
The only time that I went to Comic Con, I parked in remote parking at the stadium and took the trolley in. We didn't have any children in our group, though, so I can't really say whether the trolley is a good option for you. Personally I avoid driving or parking in downtown when there's that much going on, but I understand how it can be more complicated with a LO. I would probably all the place where you're staying and ask them for advice.
If you're up for just walking around and stuff Seaport Village is a nice little tourist trap. The whole gaslamp area is nice to walk around day or night. You've got a lot of restaurants and shopping, (Ghirardelli is one of my faves) There's also a mall within walking distance, Horton Plaza. If you didn't get a chance to see it before, the USS Midway is kind of fun. They're always adding new sections to look through.
