Protocol on DH graduating a course?

I've been with DH since before he joined the Marines, but for the first five years of his career we were separated. Tomorrow he graduates from a long, arduous leadership course, and I'm wondering what the protocol is on my part, since I've never actually been physically WITH him for any sort of graduation other than boot camp. Are gifts generally involved? A hearty pat on the back? I want him to feel like I appreciate all the hard work he's put in (really, he's been working his little booty off), but I also don't want him to think I'm totally lame for making a huge deal of it. What do you do? I was thinking of taking him out to dinner and letting him pick out a new case for his iPhone (he's a technology buff and has been moaning about his old case for months, but the one he wants is expensive... gah, that is a story for another post). Anyway, does that sound appropriate?

Re: Protocol on DH graduating a course?

  • It really depends on the course.  I don't believe completion of most courses requires a gift.  I would take him out to dinner.  If you really feel the need to give him a gift, I think the iPhone cover sounds like a good idea.

A gift is appropriate if the two of you "do" gifts for non-holiday occasions.

  • Is it Corporal's Course? Sergeant's Course?

I wouldn't really do a gift for either. I'd take him to dinner anywhere he wanted and knock boots or whatever though.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

I'm the Stan on this one. The course's are of course an accomplishment but I don't think they warrant gifts.

  • I don't think you NEED to give him a gift, but if you WANT to give him a gift that's up to you.

    I like Stan's suggestion best.  ;)

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! The course was his PME school and Sergeant's Course all wrapped into one. I ended up taking him to his favorite restaurant and foregoing the gift, which he seemed happy with. We aren't huge gift-givers, even on major occasions, but I felt like maybe it was something that was expected? I felt a little silly showing up in jeans to the graduation ceremony, as many women were in sundresses with cameras in hand. I immediately regretted not getting him the darn case, but hubby assured me the graduation was not that big of a deal, haha. Anyway, thanks again, I really appreciate it!!
