Best place to get fresh fruits & veggies?

This is the one thing I can't seem to find a great selection on.  I need to best store/stores for fresh fruits & vegetables for a good price.  We had Sprouts and Sunflower Market in Colorado that had great selection, price and tasted great.  I think Trader Joe's prices are kind of high and they don't have a great selection.  Is Whole Foods the only good one here?  Their prices are crazy.

  • I get a lot of good items at Super Target. They usually have things on sale and I don't spend much more than at a grocery store. Sometimes less because they don't have as big of a selection. HyVee I sometimes get stuff but the majority of the time I try to buy strawberries they are moldy already.
  • Whole Foods and the Stonybrook HyVee are the best I've found.  WF can get crazy $$ but you don't have to buy everything organic.  They have Georgia grown peaches for $.99 right now...way cheaper than HV and they are AMAZING.  I may or may not have bought 4 lbs worth :)

WF is cheaper for avocados, most lettuce, organic broccoli and carrots.  HV has a good selection of organic apples (their Braeburn are our faves at $1.49/lb).

The farmers markets are just gearing up so that would get you through the summer.

  • We have been to the farmers market a couple times, I guess we're just really early for the fruits.  I'm trying to get more fruits and veggies in our diet, so I'm trying to save where I can.  I guess I should check out Whole Foods at least for fresh produce.

  • You wont find local fruit (not counting berries which come in early summer) until the end of the season - august.

The good apples come in Aug and Sept.

Vege - summer, Fruit - late summer/early fall

yep! the first fruits will be cherries, peaches, ect......and the last will be apples.

  • I always hear people say great things about Costco fruit.
  • Fareway sources a lot of thier produce w/ local farmers etc.   The selection usually isn't that huge, but what they have is usually pretty good.
  • Costco does have a great selection. If we're going there anyway we'll buy their strawberries, pineapple (best in town, no joke), cut up broccoli (it comes out to $1.49 a lb and it's already cut so no waste), kiwi.

  • We buy a lot of our fruit and veggies at Costco as well. I was suprised at how good it was and they do have a pretty awesome selection.
  • I agree with the Hy-vee strawberries.  The last couple ones we got we couldn't even eat them because they were so moldy and had only had them a couple days.  Grrr.

I saw fruit/veggie stands going up in two spots today along 84th (in Mangelson's parking lot and by Park Drive in Ralston).  The Park Drive one had tomatoes, melons, and some other stuff on their signs as I was driving by
