So, with the looming possibility (reality) of the gov't shutting down 7/1 ... I have some questions regarding passports.
I'm going through a divorce - paperwork should be signed by the end of this week. That being said - I've heard that if you are divorced when you submit your passport you need to also have your divorce paperwork. Is this true?
Also - will the processing of them be delayed due to the state level shutting down? It's through the federal level for passports isn't it?
Just trying to figuer out if I need to scramble to get my passport application in before the divorce gets submitted / gov't shuts down - as I would like to have my passport by the time I'm an offical single lady again.
(The divorce will not make the 7/1 shut down date - it will be submited the day it reopens.)
TIA!
Re: Passport Advice?
The Twin Cities has its own passport office for expedited service (and general questions, I believe). As a federal office, I'd imagine it should remain open.

There's talk that the courts will stay open. Not sure if services will be limited or not.
Passports are all federal so the state won't impact it. Well, it will if you can't get a document you need from the state. To get a passport with your new name, you need to show that you legally changed your name which means your final divorce decree with the stamp from the court, not just the divorce paperwork that you sign. This means you'll be single before you can even apply for a passport in your new name.
They will apparently issue passports if you cannot provide proof of a name change but it's going to be easier to just show the divorce decree. Who knows what hoops they make you jump through if you can't document your name change.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
Are you planning on going somewhere right away? If so, will your legal name be changed by the time of your trip?
When I got married, it took me a while to get my name changed. When I left the country I used my maiden name to book my ticket and used my passport.
I would wait till you legally have your name changed to change your passport otherwise you likely could run into hold-ups.
