Help me solve my princess problem
There will be a multi-generational family photo shoot when we go to MN for vacation in July. I'm contemplating a major hairstyle change. I can't decide if I should cut it now and have it short and spunky for the photo, or keep it long w/ Zooey Deschanelesque bangs and cut it after the photo. Having short hair is not a new thing for me, I've been a cut short then grow long then cut short etc. etc. forever. But I've had my hair on the longer side (below the chin) for a few years now. I'm thinking of cutting it like this but a little longer/shaggier in the back. WWYD?

"What is a week-end?"
i think you'd look great with that cut!
i'll second Pam&John's rec, and add that you should consider the time styling will add to your morning.
My vote would be to stay Zooey until after.
ditto but i am also not one to make drastic hair changes often, especially before having photos taken
I think you need to post a current photo
Ok, ok. Here is a recent photo. I'm the one on the left.
And although it's not a high quality photo, you can kind of see me with a similar hairstyle here from '05. It's the closest thing to a short hair cut photo i have of myself on the interwebs.
now that I've seen the current photo, I'd keep the Zooey look -- you're adorable! wait until after the photo shoot for the more radical change.
I knwo you're not me, but I kind of liken this stuff to my wedding photos -- I didn't want to look at myself and wonder who the heck that was... that was the basis of my comment about how you'd want to see this photo in X years. In the end, of course, if you want a change, go for it!
"What is a week-end?"
LOL!
I like both, actually! I trend towards short dos, but you can pull both off which is awesome. I agree with pps who ask about time to do short hair vs. long hair in the morning. I cut mine recently to avoid the perpetual "mom ponytail" thing that was going on, but now it doesn't look good if i just let it air dry. (as evidenced on saturday morning!)
Agreed. Plus it looks like that cut might be harder to style, which might be frustrating if you're trying to get it to look good for a picture.

I agree with Pam! You look great in the photo of you and your DH, very classy hair-do, so I'd go with that.
I may be a dissenter (typical), but I would cut your hair if you want to cut your hair. I have friends who kept their hair long "for the wedding" and they don't even look like themselves in their pictures.
I also alternate between short and long hair, and I say you cut it if you want to cut it. Both cuts look great on you. If you've had it short before and liked it, it's low risk. Besides, the family photo is a snapshot in time. There will be another one with another hairstyle.
I have a day once in a while where I wish I'd had an updo for my wedding, but my shorter hair is so much more me than a french twist. It would have been a totally different look, and I'm glad I went with the hair I wanted to have for the year leading up to the wedding, rather than hair I wanted for one day. But that's just me
I think your shorter hair is cute, and I agree that if you want a shorter cut, you should get one.
But as far as whether you should get it before or after the photos, I think that boils down to two things: how much do you trust your stylist and, as Pam said, what do you want to see in these photos is 20 years.
There is no way I'd get a dramatic cut right before important photos if I didn't have a good, long term, relationship with my stylist. If your stylist knows your hair, and can give you the cut you want in a way that will be flattering on you, then go ahead and go for it. But, if you're going to someone new, or someone new enough that she's never given you a short cut, then I would wait. I have a new stylist, and I just got a new, shorter cut and the first week or so after it, I'm glad I didn't have to have any pictures taken! It took that long for it to grow out enough to look good on me. My stylist is great, but she barely knows me or my hair and how it behaves and I think that if she'd known those things, maybe she would not have gone quite as short to begin with. Now, I love it and I'm comfortable enough with styling it on my own.
As far as how you want to look in the future - if you're the type to go long/short/long/short (and it kind of seems like you from what you've said), then it's not as big a factor. But, if the short thing is just an experiment and you think there's a good chance that your "real" look is longer hair, then I'd wait.
Thanks everyone for your input & compliments! I'm going to stick with my Zooey look through the photos, and most likely hack it all off afterwards. The long hair plus bangs have been fun, but with the new baby and having to be at work at a certain time, I need a style that I can dry quickly, funk up with some product and head out.
