Kid's pictures on the internet

I was hanging out with a bunch of girlfriend's last night, and the topic of posting kid's pictures on the internet came up. Some of the moms felt very strongly about their kids pictures NOT being anywhere on the internet, and said they get really angry when a family member/friend posts pictures of their (the mom's) kids (like the kid's aunt posting pictures of the kids on Facebook). Others didn't seem to think it was a big deal.

So, I'm curious where people here stand on this. How do you feel about posting pictures of your kids or other people's kids (or other people posting pictures of your kids) on the internet and sites like Facebook? Is it a no-go, or do you not care?

Re: Kid's pictures on the internet

  • I don't think it's a big deal. Considering my family lives across the country I like seeing their pictures just like they like seeing mine. That'll be even more so the case when we have kids.
  • I don't love it, honestly, but I've given up fighting the battle since the pictures are being shared with good intentions.

If I take a picture with my camera, it's my picture, and I would like to be able to do with it as I please. So, I try to extend the same courtesy to others, even if it is a picture of my kid. If someone asks me to take a pic down, of course I will honor that, and I would hope that someone would do the same if I requested it.

I know not everyone has the same privacy settings that I do, and I guess that's what bugs me the most: the fact that I can't control who sees what. But in the end, it's just a picture, and I trust my friends and family not to post anything too questionable (like naked bath shots or whatever) on FB where friends of friends of friends can see it.

  • I have cousins and friends who plaster their pages or my news feed with pics of their babies. I don't mind that they do that, I can ignore if needed. In fact, one of my friends has a baby blog and it's mostly all about her daughter. They never really disclose their exact location and most I know have the privacy settings turned on.

  • I don't have kids but the only thing that I would be adverse to is photos of kids naked in the bath. I know they're cute but I just wouldn't do that.
  • I am super paranoid about posting other people's kids' pics since I teach and I see how we need to get permission to post kid's pics. Even when we do post, no names are mentioned on the site.

If they are generic, innocent photos...I don't see the harm.

  • What was these women's opposition to posting pics online? That pervs would get a hold of them or something?

They didn't even really go that far... The most vocal mom said it was mainly because "once they're on the internet, they're on there forever". Another mom said there are certain people she doesn't want involved in her life (like old friends or family members she has issues with), and she gets angry when her sister-in-law posts pictures of her daughter on Facebook, because her SIL is FB friends with some of these people.

  • I don't mind people posting pics of R on FB because only friends see those pictures with my privacy settings. Some relatives have complained I don't put enough pictures of her online but that's just my preference.

  • Clearly I have pictures of my children online. I do not post bath time/potty time pictures anywhere no matter what my privacy setting is however.

this is how I feel. My privacy settings are very high and my last name is not even on FB only my middle name. I have never had family post a photo, just a friend that was here for a playdate, and it didn't bother me.
