Question on colleges

So I can hardly believe my baby sister is 16 and considering colleges. She lives in Florida and wants to go to school in the city..she is gathering her list of schools and touring them in FL,VA, NY. At the end of the day who ever gives her a better scholarship package is where she wants to go since she fully intends to go on to professional school which will be more costly. She toured and added Trinity in DC to her list...I'm not from here so just wondering feedback on this school.

Re: Question on colleges

  • YAY! I am a TC graduate! Happy to talk to her!

ETA - sorry, it was a college when I want there, it's now a university. So... TC is now TU. Anyway. Still happy to talk to her, although I admit my information is dated.

  • Georgetown has suprisingly good financial aid packages.  They have a huge endowment and as a result are able to provide both scholarship and need based aid.

I went there for law school - not undergrad.  I actually started at American and then transferred to Gtown and it was cheaper for me (i.e., less out of pocket) to attend Gtown.  It also has a good reputation, which is important when applying to grad schools.

  • I work with Trinity occasionally, and it is a great school. They have really changed their focus in recent years and now most of their students are first-generation college students and many are non-traditional students. There was a great Washington Post Magazine article about their president, Pat McGuire about a year ago. It might be worth reading for some perspective on how the school is perceived by others.

  • I went to both GWU (undergrad) and Georgetown (grad), so if she ends up adding those schools to her list, I'm happy to give my perspective.

I also grew up in Florida and have a lot of friends who went to Florida schools. Which FL colleges is she considering?

Pat McGuire is a grad, too, and has been president for quite a while. For better or worse (depending on if you went there, and when...), folks love her and the changes she's made, or they don't. I like her, personally. (She served on a task force with me at my job  -- the only string I was able to pull!)

I LOVED the school. I went to a "girls' school" in GA my first two years and then transferred to Trinity -- which even back then was WAY more of a "woman's college" - and yes, there is a BIG difference. Even though I am not Catholic, TC gave me a home, and I am still BFFs with someone I met there in January 1979 (yes, I even transferred midyear -- there's a reason for my adult insecurities!).

Since I was not smart enough to get a grad degree when I was younger (I got married at 24 the first time... no $... then moved to midwest and didn't know how long we'd be there), I have no assvice to provide on whether or not its better to go to the same school for both degrees. As an employer, though, I'd look for more diversity in thinking... would prefer to see a diff school for one degree than the other. But that's just me.

  • P&j--I like her, too. She's a force to be reckoned with and a dynamic leader. All the TC/TU grads I know are impressive women, so I respect the school!
