kitchen decorating question (now with PIP)

Sometimes I really feel like a home decor dunce, so I thought I would post this question here. We have a large, eat-in kitchen (no separate dining room). There are two corner cabinets in the corner of my kitchen and each one has three shelves on it, to display whatever. So my question is what kind of things would you display on them?

We don't own china, which is what I see displayed on shelves like this in most dining rooms. Currently I have some random stuff stuck on the shelves like: a crystal candy dish (which has remained empty because if it isn't my DS will hover near it and whine),  a fancy tea set which doesn't match my kitchen, a vase....none of which I particularly like there.

So what kinds of things would you stick there?

Re: kitchen decorating question (now with PIP)

  • you can go buy some kitschy (sp?) stuff from Home Goods or soemthing.

I would probably put baskets and vases there.  Like cute pottery vases.  You could also get some mugs and some cute collector plates.

    Also - cookbooks

George had an antique-ish metal egg basket in his kitchen in his old house.  I always thought that was cute.

Do you have wine glasses or other cocktail glasses?

  • yeah, I was just in home goods at lunch looking around. I didn't see anything that would go exceptionally well in my particular kitchen (its pale yellow with oak cabinets) but they did have a lot of fun stuff.

DH is so going to roll his eyes at me bringing more "junk" into the house.

ETA: I do have wine glasses, but they are pretty basic and I wouldn't think they are display-worthy

  • wine glasses are better than bare.

you could totally just go to Goodwill and get some stuff too.

  • We have a corner china cabinet, the top half is open shelving with 2 doors and the bottom is closed (and thus is our throw-all, I can barely close the doors sometimes).  I have some formal china pieces that I inherited as background, but I would just group things together that you like.  One thing I like to do, is use old books-I got a few of these for Christmas http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?navAction=jump&id=973854&parentid=SEARCH_RESULTS&color=045 and I like to use them to add different elevations on the shelves.  I have 2 horizontally and then I have a really tiny frame on top.  I would go to Homegoods and just find some stuff that you find visually appealing, maybe a cute little vintage globe, a large letter (either your last name-I have "W"s all over our house), little decorative frames, etc.

  • I don't like to buy stuff just because.  I've picked up little things here and there - a wooden bird at the beach last summer, a pretty framed print at a gift shop a couple of years ago, etc.  Rather than buying stuff just to fill in a gap, I'd keep my eyes peeled while out shopping and pick up things that I love.

See, I am kind of the same way about this. It's the reason there has been a bare wall over my sofa for two years. I have seen a ton of things that would work there, but nothing I really loved and had to have. I think I will just continue checking into Home Goods, Pier One, and antique stores from time to time and pick up anything that might fit.

  • I like to cookbook idea but you could also put in some pictures frames or depending on the decor of the rest of your house carrying that through into the kitchen.

  • here's a pic....sort of. the pic is of my table but you can see one of the cabinets in the background.

  • The problem is how tall it is--little bits won't fill the space nicely.  I'd do exactly what Dani suggested and just keep your eyes peeled for something you like that will go there, perhaps on a vacation.
  • I would probably put a decorate serving platter on one shelf and maybe a vase on the tall one.
  • I really like the others' suggestions of cookbooks, picture frames, and knick knacks that have a story or sentimental value behind them.

Also I have seen on a few of the decorating blogs that some people take books they like, that aren't necessarily 'pretty' and they wrap them with nice looking wrapping paper or scrapbook paper. Maybe a color or pattern that lies in with your kitchen colors? (when I think of this it reminds me of wrapping my text books in paper bags in HS. Fun times!)

  • I'm not a fan of buying junk just to fill up a space, but sometimes, I'm so anti-junk that I end up w/ nothing.  Witness my now bare for 4 years bedroom walls.

I think you should start going places like you mentioned w/ the intention of buying a few things you like and then building some kind of theme around them.  Like obviously you dont' NEED 4 differently orange bowls, but who knows, maybe an orange bowl will catch your eye at Pier One and then you buy another one in a different size or shape or one w/ a different pattern, but the same basic design, etc.

  • Do you have an overabundance of storage space in your kitchen?

Since I have rather limited above counter cabinet storage in our kitchen I would use that space to hold serving platters (which always seem to large to fit properly in my cabinets anyway,) nice looking mixing bowls, glass pitchers, bakeware/cookware (like the le crueset stoneware) if you have that sort of thing.

I have a china cabinet w/ hutch in our dining room and I use it to hold a tea set, vases, candlesticks, ice bucket, decanters, etc.
