Thanks for the kind words in the post from last night. This woman is a fire cracker. You'd never know she was 91. She used to walk 3-4 miles everyday until she got sick this month and she mowed her own lawn until this year. She even shovels her own driveway when it snows!! She lives on her own and refuses to go into a home or development for seniors. Two of her sisters are in the same home (assisted living to full independent living depending on your health) in NJ and she won't go live with them. Now you all know where I get my stubborn nature from!
Anyhow. Her surgery is scheduled for July 26th. My mom will fly in on the 25th and I'll definitely be going up on my day off to help out and probably at least one other day during the week as well. The recovery really depends on her and her body and how it handles the surgery and anesthia at her age.
Her muscle disease is called Polymyalgia Rheumatica. I Googled it and it sounds common in older folks, but can cause her to not become disabled (which would kill her independent soul if it happens) if not treated properly. It can take from 2-6 years to be completely gone. She is on prednisone for that and has a f/u with her doctor in a month. The disease causes pain and stiffness in her shoulders and necks which can spread to her hips (it isn't in her hips yet) and other symptoms are anemia, headaches, fatigue, depression, and weight loss. My mom said she sounded upset after that appointment and thinks my grandmother is fearing the loss of her independence. Hopefully, it won't get to that.
Re: Another Update- my Grammie
Well it sounds like they caught the muscle disease early so hopefully the prednisone will help it from progressing so she doesn't loose her independence. I am glad her Dr. is following her carefully.
Sending T&Ps that the surgery goes well!
