Farmer's Market question

My mom is coming Friday, and wants to go to the Farmer's Market on Saturday. I told her it would depend on the weather and how Benjamin's night is on Friday. I've never been since I usually work on Saturdays, so it's a new thing for me!

My question - how is parking? And is it really worth it? My biggest thing is Benjamin doesn't like when I wear the nursing cover or a blanket - he doesn't like stuff on his head. So, when we're out, I just nurse in the bathroom (not ideal, but he refuses to eat when I cover him). Are there bathrooms available or is it just porta-potties? If he liked being covered, I could just nurse in the car, but that's not gonna work!

 Thanks ladies!

Re: Farmer's Market question

  • Parking can be kind of tough, that downtown market has gotten so busy/crowded. It's a nice one, though.

As far as nursing, you could try any of the business around there, esp. the restaurants. Could you just nurse him in the car without the cover? I doubt that anyone could really see in the car too well if that is the concern.

  • If you go really early (8am when it opens) you can usually always find parking on the 10th street bridge.  You can walk the whole market in under an hour.

  • Sometimes it is a bear to get a stroller around the downtown FM.  I would opt to go Sunday and go to Aksarben.  Ample parking, easy to get around, I was super impressed!
  • I had the same problem w/ H.  She hated the cover.

I've learned to find odd places to nurse because I loathe sitting in a bathroom.

If you can find a corner you can face into it, hide behind a stroller while sitting against a wall, I've sat in the back of my minivan, have family hold a blanket up and provide a shield... or just go for it and not worry about other people :)

  • One time I sat in the backseat of my car and put a blanket over the window so no one could see in. I just rolled the window down a little bit and stuck the blanket in a little and rolled it back up. I hated using a cover cause I always felt like he couldn't breath! Don't let having to nurse stop you from doing things. Just try to find ways to make it work. You will start to resent it quick otherwise!

  • Thanks for the help ladies! I'm hoping we don't have to go -- it's supposed to be really hot, and he's been eating at 7am, and then goes back to sleep for a couple hours. We'll see how his night goes. :-)

I wondered about nursing in the van, which is part of why I asked about parking. I lost all modesty a week ago, and have the opinion of if it bothers you, then don't look! But, I'm not talented enough yet to stand or sit in funky positions - I have to be sitting in a chair or something to be able to get him latched on and eating - so I have to look at that too.

  • I nurse in the vehicle and I don't use a cover.  Sawyer as days where he hates to be covered up.

If you do go tomorrow.  There is a spot you can probably hide out and sit and feed.

Do you know where Trini's is or Souq or what is referred to as the passageway?  It is located on Harney across from what used to be French Cafe.

Don't go downstairs but walk past Souq down the hall and there is a small bathroom (upper level).  Near the bathroom is just a small area that you could probably sit and feed (I can't recall if there is a bench or not but you can sit on the floor).

Feed without the cover but have your mom hold a cover and if someone is walking toward you, then have her hold up a cover to cover you up but not have it on him.  Also, I will sometimes just use my shirt to make sure the top of the boob is covered with a blanket next to me to quickly cover up if needed.
