My post for the day--were you a thumbsucker?
If you did suck your thumb when did you stop? Please do not reply if you still suck your thumb. What made you stop sucking your thumb? Thanks.
Re: My post for the day--were you a thumbsucker?
Yup, I sucked my thumb. I stopped way later than I should have lol.
I just didn't want to do it anymore. but I still sleep with my right hand (the thumb I sucked) kind of tucked up under chin/cheek so I guess the habit is still with me.
I sucked my thumb until I was about 10
I had extensive dental work and braces due to this. Part of my gums actually have an indentation from the thumb sucking.
I stopped when I started getting prep work for my braces. I had to wear head gear at night as a result of the thumb sucking, and it was no longer possible to suck my thumb.
My mom tried EVERYTHING to get me to stop, and nothing worked.

She's 5, right? Is there a reason you want to break her of the habit right now? In my experience most people stop on their own eventually.
FTR three out of the four of us sucked our thumbs. Three of us needed braces - my sister (who did NOT suck her thumb), my brother (who sucked his the shortest amount of time), and me. My other brother sucked his the longest and has perfect teeth.
Yes, I sucked my thumb until I was 9 and was only broken of the habit when my parents were told that I would need braces.
The biggest part of my problem was that I wasn't even concious that I was doing it. The orthodontist told my mom to put a sock over my hand... and it worked.
When I was in college my great-grandmother died and I sucked my thumb the night I found out. I was shocked and embarassed when I realized what I was doing...
One of my friends is doing this with her son who is a chronic finger sucker. So far it's working!

The dentist just gave me a lecture at her last appointment, said that her bite is way jacked up and its only getting worse because of the thumbsucking. She said that we needed to start trying to get her to stop, her adult teeth are coming in now.
If i cannot get her to stop the dentist said they need to install an appliance in her mouth.
LOL, the bridge across the roof of her mouth? I had that when i was little. It was awful. I still sucked my thumb though.
Do any of her friends suck their thumbs? Start having lots of sleepovers with friends who don't suck their thumbs and think its gross. I think that's why I stopped - I was embarrassed.
I did, but I'm no help because I don't remember how and why I stopped. I don't remember it being an ordeal, so I'm guessing I just stopped because I was ready to.
I have an overbite and a permanent dent in my left thumbnail from it.
I was a thumb sucker and I did need braces. I stopped later than I should have and at that point, only because I wanted to do so. Mouth appliances, head gear, nail polish, bad tasting stuff, nothing worked. As I got older, I would only suck my thumb when I went to sleep. I wouldn't do it at sleepovers.
FWIW, I would have needed braces anyway because of my over bite. After 2 rounds of braces, I STILL have a slight overbite because my jaw is "too small for my teeth". To correct it, they would have to cut my mouth/jaw out and reposition it, wire my mouth shut for 6 months and that might not even work...
