Fever only when waking up?

Good morning!

For the past 2 days, my 14 month old has been having a tough time.  Everytime he wakes up, he has a fever (which has been running around 100) and wakes up crying.  This is extremely rare for him as he always wakes up very happy.  This happens in the morning and also during both of his naps during the day.

The weird part is that after about 30 minutes of being awake, he seems to feel better.  He starts to play and his fever seems to go down.  He has only had 2 ear infections and with both of those he had cold symptoms along with it and now he has no symptoms other than the fever.  I also was thinking it might be teething, but he has never had a problem teething or had a fever with it. He just seems to feel miserable when he gets up and is very clingy.  I am probably going to be calling the Dr. this morning, but I was just wondering if anybody had something similar happen before.  Any insight? It's so hard not knowing what is wrong!

  • I assume it's not too warm in his room?

  • Does he have his molars? Ella, was like this for about 2weeks, when her 1yr molars were coming in, she'd be fine during the day, but wake up at night crying/hot, and then again in the morning, she'd feel like she'd have a fever.

  • Good thought. I think he is cool enough though.  We keep our air on 70 and his ceiling fan is going. His room also seems to stay the coolest. He is also doing it during the day when my friend watches him at her house, although I think her house is warmer than ours.  I could try to put him in something else to sleep though.

  • C has done this a few times.  For some reason when he has a slight cold or is teething, he will wake up from his nap with a fever around 99.  Then after being up for a little bit he cools down and is his regular self again.  He's never had an ear infection be the cause.  We don't take him to the doctor for it and it's never lasted more than 2 or 3 days at a time.  You could call the doctor for peace of mind, but I wouldn't worry too much if the fever is staying around 100 or lower.  Good luck, I hope he feels better soon.

  • Three of his molars have come through and I think the last one is working on coming in so it could very well be that.  It just seemed odd that he didn't do this with the other 3, which all came in at the same time.  Teething is my first thought though because he doesn't seem sick.  Good to know that someone else experienced this!

  • My first thought was Ear Infection - only because after they've been laying down and sit up I think sometimes they get discomfort as the fluid shifting around makes them uncomfortable (groggy, balance is off...etc). I am by no means a doctor - so I could be terribly off here, but if my kiddos were showing those symptoms I'd think ears.  Good Luck!  It's always a guessing game, isn't it!
