My post: WDYT about this?

On my way into work lately I have seen a guy sitting at one of the lights. He's holding a sign that says "Handyman available....need work. I'm a dad. God Bless" or something like that. It kind of makes me sad. He's just an average looking middle aged guy, doesn't look crazy or strung out or anything like that. It strikes me as really sad.

My question is, would you ever hire someone like this to do work around your house? Why or why not?

  • No, probably not...even though it makes me sad and I think that it's most likely 100% true, I would still worry the entire time since I don't know him and he has access to my home.

  • Maybe.  I don't think I would let him do work inside my house necessarily but if I needed the lawn mowed maybe or leaves raked or driveway redone etc I think I might use someone like that.

  • Maybe- but only to do outside work.  I would hire a handyman from Craigslist, which isn't much different, still a stranger.  And I wouldn't feel comfortable with a non-licensed/insured handyman coming inside to do anything, but I would hire for landscaping, fencing, things like that.

    This.

In this day in age, unfortunately, you can't trust people.

  • Ditto AKBride.  I would want to do something, but my husband would never go for having someone we didn't know in our home.

  • Yeah, I would think I would want to help him out. But then I think that is how Elizabeth Smart's kidnapper got access to her (her dad picked him up to do some work at their house). Far fetched, but still, creepy.

  • 99.5%  of the people we have do work around our house have been recc'd by someone else, so probably not.  I did find an electrician while shopping in BB&B, got his card and hired him, so that was rather random.

Also maybe I know I have heard stories of people hiring or attempting to hire people who are panhandling to do stuff and the panhandlers have blown them off, never shown up, etc.

This, exactly.  That is immediately where my mind went.  I wish it weren't so, but you just can't be too careful.

  • Anytime I think about hiring a handyman or anything I first ask family and friends for anyone they have used or known someone who have used them. I dont think I would hire someone off of the street to do anything inside our house. Like others said, perhaps yard work, outside work, etc but I know my DH would insist that he were home while anyone was there, not just me.

    Agreed.

  • This wouldn't bother me that much.  I'm not sure how carefully the other tradesman/repairmen that come to my house are vetted either.  Alot of them are independent contractors, but no one's ever spelled that out to me.

I'd hire someone like that to do outside work but probably not inside until I knew them better.
