Wdyt of employee salary databases?
Baltimore County will be posting the names of employees and their salaries tomorrow. I know the city and state already do this. What do you think? Have you looked up people before or will you?

Re: Wdyt of employee salary databases?
I think they are fine. I think they are especially good for state and federally funded positions, when tax dollars go to pay their salaries.
I think people put a lot of faith in the databases though - I think people think they are really accurate. The ones I know of don't alway have the most complete information about individuals' salaries. So, sometimes peole are shown to make more money than they do (if for example there has been a recent change in their position) and sometimes show people to be making less than what they actually make (from my experience, in the executive level).
I work for the state, so my salary is published. I don't look up co-workers (at my same level), but I have looked up people higher than me. I don't like to look up people at my own level because, what am I going to do if they make more than me and I think I'm worth more than them? Right now we aren't getting any raises, so I'd mostly just be mad and frustrated.
I think they're fine. I work for the federal government and I'm sure my salary is out there somewhere although the federal databases tend to be slower in terms of being updated. I think it's important that people have ideas of how much people in the government make. I know the DOD, CIA etc don't publish theirs for security reasons (at least as far as I know, someone correct me if I'm wrong) so I think that removes that worry.
I don't know - it seems kinda stupid to me.
Are they going to start making their whole accounting system accessible too?
When my MIL's budget for re-decorating her perfectly fine office was pretty ridiculous and unnecessary. But, she had to use the money for redecorating the office. She couldn't have used the money to give bonuses to her employees if she wanted too - so she spent the money getting new sofas, desks, etc. To me, that's where the waste and overspending is.
I have worked for 2 state governments so my salary is and has been published and I don't really care. I don't look up other people, I really don't care that much and like another said, if someone on my level was making more, I would just get frustrated.
I also agree that not all salaries are correct. There are many people here that make more than what is reported if they have research money they are working with or any other type of money that come in from speaking, tv, etc.

While I think that most would agree that discussing your coworker's salary is not water cooler conversation, I don't have a problem with people looking up what I make when this type of information is released...just keep it to yourself that you know what Bob in Accounting makes and so on and so on. With that said, I've always been in positions where I've had access to salary and payroll information and confidentiality has always been expected of me (and for the record I have no problem with that!).
I think it's natural to be nosy about what your counterparts make...especially if they do less and make more. But like someone said, there's rarely an opportunity for you to petition to get a raise when you work for the government.
I don't think the general public is out to look and see what you brought home last year though. I think that these reports are justifiable in the sense that you (the public) want to see where your tax dollars are going. .
