Some of my friends are questioning this decision I made. So I thought I'd see what others have to say.
Back story: I'm dissatisfied with my job (ok, I hate it and it frustrates me), but my boss is unaware I'm searching. She really likes me and the work I do.
I interviewed for a position, but they'd need me to start on Tuesday. I already requested tomorrow off. I said I could maybe give my boss one week's notice, but I'd prefer two, and no way could I start Tuesday. While I don't enjoy my job, I take pride in my work and the part I play in our show. It could hurt the show if I left on such short notice.
My friends think I'm crazy and should've just left since I'm so unhappy. So... thoughts? I'm good with my decision, I just wanted to hear other opinions.

Totally agree with this.
You did the right and respectable thing by giving your current employer notice and not leaving them hanging. As much as you hate it there, I wouldn't burn any bridges. Who knows - you may need or want someone there to vouch for you some day.
And like Steph said - any respectable employer should understand your decision to not stiff your old boss and think more of you for doing so.
And...Congrats on the new job!!
I guess I maybe should've also mentioned, because I'm not available immediately, they are not giving me the job.
She did say she could respect me wanting to give my current employer notice and if they get extended for another round, she'd call me (which should give me enough notice for my boss).
Unfortunately, this is the way it is in my field. 99% of the jobs are last minute - they ask you to come in for an interview, looking for you to start immediately. I didn't have full details on this particular position when I went in (although I knew it was very likely). At least I made a contact and she did seem impressed and regretted I couldn't start immediately. So I am hopeful if they another order, they'll call me. I think the other person she's leaning towards is only available til the end of the current run.
Seriously?! Gah! Now I feel like a beeotch for congratulating you up there. I'm sorry, eMiLee - that blows.
Ok, then, what I said still stands - if they can't respect you for wanting to respect your current employer, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway. I mean, would they really want someone working for them knowing that they could totally do the same and ditch them at the drop of a hat like that?
Just curious (you don't have to say) but what industry are you in that this is the norm?
I totally agree with everyone here.
Why would your friends try to convince you otherwise? On what grounds are they basing their opinions? I'm just curious to see if they came up with some angle we are missing?

I'm in tv/film. I'm technically freelance. But I happened to land in a company with a very long running show. Which is good. But it's very unusual. So it's also very difficult to trade in a job I know I can keep for pretty much as long as I want it, for something that will only last til the end of August. But I've been at this job for 3+ years and I need something new.
This job wasn't even posted on any of the industry job sites. It was a friend of a friend was looking for someone. Which is the absolute norm. They say it about every industry, but knowing someone in the company/project is almost a necessity. So I can't afford to burn a bridge with my current employer; it's a small world and would make finding a new job very difficult; this is the only company on my resume that has relevant work experience. And finding a job that doesn't start the following Monday is almost impossible. All of which adds up to leaving me very much stuck.
