Of course! Yeah a tripod is essential for long exposures and quite helpful for low light situations! Just make sure you invest in one that can support the weight of your camera. It's often recommended that a tripod is one piece of equipment that you don't cheap out on because you are trusting it to support your equipment and to not tip over
Manfrotto (Bogen) is a good brand, it's pricey but worth it!
I have a Manfrotto with a ball and socket head: great for adjusting composition and the quick release system is flawless!
