How to get into HR

Hi everyone!  I have been reading this message board for a while, but this is my first post.

I am trying to make a career switch and would like your advice.  I'd like to get into Human Resources but all the jobs I am finding require ten years of HR experience.  I have a BS in Marketing, but don't know what kind of entry level positions I can search for to begin to get experience. Can anyone help me out?

 Thanks in advance!  :-)

Re: How to get into HR

  • Try a coordinator position first. Pay will suck, but it's the only way you will be able to get experience under your belt.

  • Thanks!  I'll look into it...

Love the dog/sprinkler pic!  Mine is just like that hahaha

  • I started out recruiting for an agency.  It was long hours, but I was eventually able to get in to corporate recruiting and then HR.

Also, I'd take HR classes if you can.

A BS in Marketing is perfect for an agency recruiting job.

  • I also wanted to add to put in your cover letter your experience that can make it into the HR field.  Marketing - great you can sell the job and company.  Admin experience - great I can do the orientation and benefits adjustments - etc.
  • What aspect of HR do you want to get into?

Many of our entry level people start out as coordinators, as the pp said. We pay pretty well, IMO, for entry level jobs, so do look around. There are teams like benefits, compensation, employee relations, recruiting...

Many of our staffing team members (recruiters) are fresh out of college.

Learning and Development team is also pretty entry level and they are most education majors- either didn't want to go into teaching in the public schools or didn't pass their boards, who knows.

The ER team, yes, they do have 10-plus years of experience.

I manage a legal program in HR and moved over from a law firm. I have really specialized knowledge though and lucked out, IMO. My next move will hopefully be employee relations (though I don't want to do ER at my current company).
