F/U Mariela's Anemia

We got some of the test results back today on Mariela's iron counts and she is lower than she was the last time (she was re-tested at 10 1/2 mo), so he's called in a prescription iron supplement for her.  The nurse warned me it tastes nasty, so we should mix it with a spoonful of yogurt or apple sauce.  They are hoping to get the last of the results back before the holiday weekend to try to find out the cause of her anemia and will call me as soon as they come in.

As it stands right now, we need to take her back in for a recheck (another vein blood draw) of her iron counts in 1-2 months.  That re-check could change based on the rest of the blood work results.  Please keep her in your T&P that this is nothing serious and hopefully even something she'll eventually outgrow.

  • What does this mean for her ? Can this cause developmentaly issues? Do they know why this is happening? I hope she gets better soon.

We aren't really sure yet what it means for her until we can figure out the root cause of it.  Her pedi ran some extra tests this time to try to figure out that cause behind it.  The outlook, treatment, and side effects all depend on what is causing it.  It could be as simple as she just naturally runs low on iron no matter what supplements we give her and is perfectly fine.  If it's severe it can affect her neuro-psychological development (school performance, attention span, ability to learn, and other brain functions).  She is fine so far developmentally and even ahead in language, so I don't think it's severe at this point.  She also could simply outgrow it at some point.
