How much to disclose?

I was suspended from my job in March for a complaint a client made to my contracting agency.  Because the complaint was made to the agency and not the company I work for an internal investigation is taking place.  It's procedure that my company lay me off until the internal investigation can be completed.  No one has told me what the complaint was because they don't want myself, other co workers or friends I might have in the contracting agency, to interfere with the internal investigation.  The internal investigation could take up to year to complete.

Before this all happened I was looking for a different position.  I'm starting to get calls back from interested companies, and they want to know why I left.  When I first interviewed with some of these places I had told them it just wasn't a good fit for me or that I didn't agree with some of the new policy changes.

I have an interview on Wednesday for a position I'm very interested in and it's the final interview before they offer the position.  Its between me and two other candidates.  This is the first interview I've had since the incident.  This morning the agency sent me an email with an attachment for Justifacts.  Other than my previous employment I'm squeaky clean (and I expect the internal investigation to show this eventually too).

How much should I disclose?

Re: How much to disclose?

  • I would be as vague as possible. Something like, "Laid off from X COMPANY as of DATE." That's the truth and that's really all you need to say. If they were to press you further in person, you can say you are laid off due to internal "restructuring" or something like that and that you remain positive about your time with the company but feel it's time to move on to a position that more specifically suits your skill set, goals, etc.

  • Thank you.  I finally got a hold of my HR dept from my previous employment and they told me that I shouldn't have to worry.  Informed me with most of those reports the employer wants to know the dates and salary and nothing more.  If they do HR plans to give a good reference and inform them that yes I was laid off but I am eligible for rehire.  They won't go into any detail unless it's necessary.
