It's not Friday..but I have a confession.

I might get flamed for this, but oh well.

I'm in a Facebook group for spouses from the base.  There have been get togethers and everyone pretty much knows everyone.  It's a private group and posts can't be seen by anyone outside of the group. You have to ask to join or be invited by a member.  My annoyance is that everyone is almost too worried about OPSEC.  I know that sounds strange, as it's usually a good thing.

Example: Someone posted information about her husband's homecoming.  He was WIA and the base had released information about his arrival.  They were hoping to get as many people at the airport as possible to welcome him home.  His wife was just posting that the time had changed, and was hoping people would still be able to make it.  She had numerous comments telling her to delete the post and that it was an OPSEC violation.  After every comment she replied that the base had already made it public information, putting it in the paper and on the radio and she wasn't violating any OPSEC regulations.  People just kept commenting!

Sorry for the long vent, I haven't posted anything on there about it because I like that people are paying attention to OPSEC, but I feel like they're taking it to an extreme.

  • I understand the frustration.  I would encourage people to just post direct links to what the base PAO has already approved for publication.

  • Someone else just asked, "What's going on with Base Housing?" (Not sure myself..so it might be a bigger deal than I realize).  The first response was, "OPSEC wont allow anyone to say until after the event so its not even worth asking..."

Taking your advice Ojo, I'm looking to see if I can find it online so I can just post a link to answer the question. I'm also about to explain the difference between PERSEC and OPSEC.

  • As someone who has to spend their day giving OPSEC reminders, I would honestly much rather have people safe than sorry.  No matter how many times you post it, and no matter how many different people post it, people still violate it.  So in this case while I can understand it getting annoying, I still would rather see people be uptight about it than lax.

As Ojo said, when it's something released by the command, I would just link the article or reference it.
