XP: WDYT of this dress?

So I posted on F&B and while ago about needing a classic black dress that I can use for fundraising galas, the ball and other formal events. I have a blue dress in rotation but have been borrowing from friends. I'd rather just start collecting a few more staples now. I don't have the ability to use Rent the Runway because of our location.

I started looking into vintage dresses. What says MN on this one?

It's tulip style on the bottom, sweetheart neckline at the top. The only thing I'm hung up on is the velvet. I have never worn a velvet dress and I'm wondering if it's dated or since the silhouette is a bit more classic, it would work out okay. Or maybe it's just not your style? Help!

Re: XP: WDYT of this dress?

  • I personally dont like velvet. I also think its really hot to wear other than in winter. But the cut/style is nice. If you like velvet, go for it

  • If it weren't velvet, I'd say go for it.  However, I HATE velvet. It gives me the willies to touch it.  It also really dates a dress, for me.  Another point, you wouldn't be able to wear it durring warm months.  You'd sweat your patooty off.

  • I know right? I've never worn velvet so I honestly have no clue whether this would drive me crazy or not.

lol @ the willies. What about it makes you not like the feel?

I thought about the weather aspect. Most of these events are Fall/Winter time frame and in the future we will be moving to a place where even in the summer temps peak in the 70s.

  • I think velvet could maybe work for winter months. I like the cut but not the fabric. It sort of reminds me of a towel.

I think you can find something similar in a fabric that won't pick up fuzzies also. :)

  • I like the dress but like a PP can't stand the thought of velvet.
    Shot first, questions later.
  • I agree with the PP that it kinda looks like a towel and I also can't stand velvet. If it were a different material it would be much nicer.

  • I LOVE the shape of the dress, it's really classic and beautiful. But I agree with everyone else, the velvet kills it for me.

This. It's stunning but I don't like velvet.

  • I like the velvet. I love the dress. I'd rock it. I'd do it with a flower in my hair. It's probably not summer-appropriate, though.
