Dairy Free Birthday Treat?
We are having a friend over for birthday dinner, and he's lactose intolerant, so I'm trying to find a dessert that is birthday-ish, but dairy free. Any ideas?
Re: Dairy Free Birthday Treat?
If you're buying (vs making) I know Whole Foods has vegan cakes you can buy, which would be dairy-free. You can also get them at Sticky Fingers Bakery and I think Cakelove has some vegan stuff too.
Otherwise . . . something like a cobbler or pie where you use shortening in the crust/topping instead of butter?

What about brownies? Betty Crocker brownie mix is lactose free according to this: http://www.lactosefreezone.com/2009/05/betty-croker-chocolate-fudge-brownie.html And these are some good from scratch that seem to have no ;actose ingredients: http://www.beantownbaker.com/2011/06/my-favorite-brownies.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BeantownBaker+%28Beantown+Baker%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

This is a REALLY good cake recipe- one of our interns is dairy and gluten free, so I've been experimenting for her.
The only caveat with chocolate is that you have to make sure your cocoa powder isn't processed with chocolate solids- anything that says dutch process cocoa is fine.
Stand up for something you believe in.
This looks amazing, and easy! I'm going on the hunt for dutch process cocoa! Thank you!
Target sells a Ghirardelli dark chocolate powder that is dutch process, if you're headed out.

Penzey's Spices in Rockville has dutch process cocoa as well.
