It just hit me...In FL, PG pigs have more rights than some people...

I saw the thread on E08 about how 60% of Californians voted for animal rights and so many also voted to ban gay marriage...

It reminded me of how--kid you not--the state constitution of Florida has an amendment protecting pregnant pigs. We voted on in (and it passed) in 2002.

Two days ago, we (as a state, I mean) voted on an amendment banning gay marriage.

So pregnant pigs have more protection than actual people here.

That kind of makes me want to vomit in my mouth a little.

*Please note: I have nothing against pigs--pregnant or otherwise. I am just a little in awe that they get constitutional protection and gay people...don't.

Jenni, sorry if bringing this up ticks you off even more Crying

The good news is in looking up that pregnant pig amendment, I re-read about how we repealed another amendment--one for a bullet train (yes, we Floridians have even voted to put a train into our constitution).

The fact that in FL, you can repeal constitutional amendments gives me hope that maybe we can try to get 2 repealed at some point. That at least is a good thing, right?

(Well, that and this whole discussion reminds me that our constitution is ridiculous. It should not be a dry-erase board where you get to put in whatever you want and then take it out. But again...this is Florida)

Re: It just hit me...In FL, PG pigs have more rights than some people...

  • While I agree the contradiction adds a little ridiculousness to the whole situation, I wouldn't say pigs or chickens have more rights than people. We don't have any laws about pigs or chickens being allowed to marry. I'm pretty sure people aren't legally allowed to be locked up in cages as long as they're big enough to turn around in and lie down.

I know it's hyperbole, but really the chickens weren't asking for much.

  • I know Pesca...same thing, the pigs didn't want much either.

I just find it odd that we need to write legislation into our state constitutions for things that should be GIVENS--like protecting animals. And then to turn around and use those same constitutions to discriminate against actual tax-paying citizens.

Weird and ironic doesn't even begin to describe it.

Heck, if we even want to put it in simple human terms--people in jail can get married, can't they? I've seen plenty of those jailhouse weddings on TV. When you're in jail, you lose some of your rights, correct? But not THAT one.

Yet we deny law-abiding citizens a right we give prisoners.

I could go on all day about weird ironies, but it may be time to stop now ;)

  • stop it. its still illegal to kill pg gay people. When they loose that right then we'll start comparing animal and human rights.

  • Hmm, since I'm not familiar with the law for the pigs, I don't know what's up with it. ?But I'm guessing the pigs don't have the right to be free, live as the please, actually raise their piglets, and not be cruelly murdered.

  • Umwife, you're singing to the choir. I'm all for animal rights but geez! I've been reminding myself frequently that Amendment 2 can be repealled and even three days later I want to put my fist in the wall.
