ugh packing

Can I just say that I hate packing to go away...

We are leaving for Alaska on July 14th (just after midnight we're heading to the airport) and I decided that since we'd be taking long sleeves and long pants I could get started packing...well since we are not familliar at all with the weather DH  and I both thought we'd want to be extra prepared, so we're taking short, and long sleeves (and 3/4 for me) for each day...I literally have 2 suitcases nearly full and don't have any of his short sleeves or pants in yet!  We can take 2 a piece but we only have 2 suitcases ourselves and borrowed one from his best friend.  I guess I'd better figure out what shirts I want to eliminate so DH isn't going naked...

Although the packing part is never fun, Alaska sounds AWESOME!

How long are you guys going for?

  • Just a suggestion, but laundry service might be available on board.

Also, if DH wears undershirts, might he be able to wear the same long sleeved shirt twice? You can get creative with packing - stuffing socks and underwear inside of shoes, into cracks, etc. (sorry - I know this is unsolicited, I just travel a lot for work and have gotten a lot better at cramming 10 days of business and personal attire in a carry-on suitcase).

Also, don't forget bathing suits if you think you might want to take advantage of the pool - I hate it when I get places and realize I don't have a swimsuit with me!

  • I sooo HATE packing too. My H always say what are you packing for a year!?!? When were going away for 3 days. OOOO Alaska!! HAVE FUN!! Tell us how it is when you get back. H really wants to move there but the snow, cold, and bears tend to keep me on the other side of the fence. lol

Thanks for the suggestions, I checked about laundry service because DH only has a handful of pants, it isn't available on our ship Indifferent...I am planning to rewear pants and cardigans so really the heart of the issue is that I really need to pick and choose between shirts right now I have one short, one 3/4 and one long for each day plus 3 cardigans and a hoodie...yeah I pack WAY too much!

  • Jealous!!  I've always wanted to go to Alaska!!!!  For packing-- not sure if you have Dollar Tree Stores by you but at mine they sell those bags that look like big ziplocs and you can fill them and roll them up and release the air out of them so you can pack a ton (without needing the vacuum).  I use this on all my trips to avoid checking a bag on a plane.
  • I also hat epacking!

We went on a cruise to alaska a few years ago around the same time as you and we needed everything! There were days we wore shorts and tanks and some we wore jeans and sweatshirts. I know that probably doesn't help much but it's good to know.

You will have SO much fun! Get off the ship as much as possible. I belive this is the salmon spawning season which is awesome!

  • ugh I hate packing too, regardless of how excited I am for the actual trip. Unpacking is even worse though.

    Alaska sounds awesome though!

Oh no! I don't even have any shorts packed!  I figured I'd wear capris out and back and have shorts in my carry on but now I might need to rethink that

You really should be ok with capris. It is comfortably warm so you wouldn't be hot in capris

  • okay good!  I can always rewear the same pairs if I have to Big Smile  I can't wait, I don't know what I'm going to do to occupy my time after SIL's baby shower and packing are done

  • I feel a little late to the game here.  I just got back from Alaska about a week ago.  I am a person who prefers colder weather to warmer weather.  70s max is ideal to me so when I packed for Alaska I took a lot of capris and short sleeved shirts along with some jeans and a couple of cardigans.  I never ended up wearing any of my capris because it only got up to 68 while I was there.  I wore a cardigan everyday.  I ended up buying some sweaters because some of the places we went were supposed to be colder and I was glad I did!  So if I had to pack again for Alaska I might take one pair of capris, but mainly jeans and cardigans/sweaters.  Hope that helps a little bit and that you have a wonderful time in Alaska!  It truly is a beautiful state and I am looking forward to going back sometime :o)
