WWYD?

After all this time wishing, hoping, and hunting...it's looking like I may get two job offers. Not certain, but looking possible.

A not-so-quick update: I had my 2nd interview at Job 1 today with the guy that would be my boss's boss and it went really well. I really liked him, as much as I liked the guy that would be my boss. I would definitely be a good fit there.

My interview with Job 2 was yesterday. I though it went ok, but I didn't know if they liked me or not! The guy that would be my boss (that has the same name as BOTH guys I interviewed with at Job 1!) just emailed my friend that worked there to say he interviewed me and I was "delightful".

Even if I just get one of these, I'll take it and be happy! Easy decision! But if I'm offered both I'm going to have a tough time.

Here's the basic rundown:

Job 1

In the same industry and field I'm in now at a high-profile place. It would be a step up, career-wise. As a coworker pointed out, if I got this job at this place I would be set in this field for life. It's a very specific field, but one that could eventually pay well (and this job would pay me more than I make now)

Pros:
potential 5k - 15k more than I'm making now
shorter commute (same train stop, much less walking)
stable organization; most employees have been there for 10+ years
I really, really liked both people I interviewed with - A LOT
I am 100% comfortable there and confident I would do an excellent job

Cons:
I'm not sure I want to be in this field forever

Job 2

Events job at a university - it would be a career change for me, and a step down (I wouldn't have any direct reports)

Pros:
I'm very interested in events - as you all know!
The education benefits: I could get a free Master's degree and my imaginary children would only have to pay room and board and supplies at this school or any of the 28 in their national network
I really liked the interviewer (my would-be boss)
Shorter commute - earlier train stop AND less of a walk
more potential for growth, not necessarily in the department but within the university as a whole

Cons:
5k less than I'm making now
I'm scared that I'll end up HATING events when I actually get into it

WWYD? (and let me know if you need clarification on anything. I didn't want to list the ACTUAL places so creepy people on the interwebz could find me but I can PM them to you if you want!)

Re: WWYD?

  • This is my (probably) UO. It's a job. It doesn't have to be your passion, your interest. You don't have to get up every morning dying to get to work. As long as you don't hate life, your company, the people etc. (basically if it's like your current job) it's fine. It pays the bills and that's all, kwim?

I would take Job 1. It's better than current company, it's a salary increase and has potential for a fantastic career. And, it doesn't sound the atmosphere would be bad at all. It sounds like you would enjoy being there.

Of course, my advice is coming from someone whose current career is SAHW who volunteers on the side. I hope this made some kind of sense, and helped a little.

  • ooh that's tough. I disagree with eskamo - I'm one of those people that believes you should love what you do. I absolutely LOVE the field that I'm in and my H is so jealous that I have so much passion for what I do (or will do once I graduate). Since you've never worked in events that's really tough though, because you may end up hating it...

Is the reason you want to switch out of your current job mainly because you hate what you do or because you just don't like your employer/current position? If it's the latter, I would opt for job 1. If it's the former and you really don't like what you do, then it may be time for a career switch. You're young, 5K less isn't that much, especially since there's so much room for advancement.

ETA: I didn't mean to sound like a spoiled brat, if I absolutely had to provide for my family/spouse I would work practically any job, but if you have an option in life, I say do what you love.

    Thanks for your thoughts, girls!

Eskamo, I'm of the "you spend more time at work than anywhere else; you should at least like your job!" school of thought. I've worked a LOT of shiity jobs just to pay the bills, and I'd really like to do something and be somewhere I'd like. I should also mention that Job 1 is in nonprofit.

Musgral, as for why I hate my job - I think it's a little of both. My current company treats me like crap...but the work isn't exciting. Plus I'm the person everyone goes to to complain about EVERYTHING; it's just the nature of the field.

I really like the people at Job 1, and I'm sure I'd be a good fit - but I worry about being stuck in such a narrow field. Although I could eventually be paid pretty well, maybe one day, jobs like this open so rarely (this is the first one like it since I started searching), and there are very few places this experience transfers to...if that makes any sense. It's hard to explain without saying what it is. With Job 2, I'm also thinking super long-term - an almost free college education for future kids from this expensive school or any of the 28 other, plus a free Master's for me - would be incredible. $5k over a year isn't THAT much less...but $5-$15k more would be sweet...

And as for events, I do a lot of work with them now (since my company is so small, we all help with everything) - and that is always the small part of my job I actually enjoy. I THINK I would love it and be great at it; I think I might just be scared to leave my comfort zone.

I don't know, I'm leaning toward Job 2, I think. UGH, it's hard! Although I definitely don't want a rejection, if one decided they didn't want me and one did it would sure make this a lot easier!

  • I always say "do what you LOVE"

I never feel like I actually go to work because I loev what I do soo much, and i feel so grateful for that. Trust me, I wouldn't be a teacher if I was looking to make lots of money. It's a great feeling to know that I'm exactly where I fit, and where I want to be, and it's a relief as well.

I also think that co workers have a lot to do with it as well. I've worked in three different schools, and its amazing how much of a difference it makes to really get along with coworkers. Sometimes, if theres stress with coworkers, it will spill over to you.

  • Oh that's tough.  I think you should definitely like your job, but it sounds like you would like both.  On paper, er the computer screen, it looks like you should pick number 1, but if your gut says to go with number 2, maybe number 2.

I guess I can't help, sorry!  If it were me, I'd pick one.
