Dumb Tricare Question

I'll probably call them on Tuesday, but maybe someone here has dealt with this...

We're in the middle of a PCS.  Thankfully, we are staying within the same Tricare region on this move.  However, it's at least two more weeks until DH in-processes (he took some leave on this PCS).

Well, about 8 or 9 days ago, I started getting a headcold.  Not a big deal, I picked up some cold meds, and have been dealing with it.  But, it's descended into my chest, and seems to have taken up residence there.  It's not budging.  I've tried mucinex, I've tried various cough remedies.  Nothing is working, other than to temporarily help reduce the pain of the coughing...  I can still function, so long as no one minds me hacking and coughing and having to blow my nose all the time.  (I'm going thru enough tissues that we bought a couple extra boxes of them for our hotel room...)

Obviously, my PCM is back at the last base.  I won't get a PCM at this base until DH inprocesses, and gets our address changed in DEERS.  Is it possible to get a normal doctor's appointment here?  Or, am I basically stuck with trying to go to an urgent care/ER type place, because I don't have any local clinic to which I am assigned?  If ER is my only choice, I might try to stick it out for a little longer, because it'll waste a whole day (at least) to go to an ER for a chest cough crappy feeling...

Re: Dumb Tricare Question

  • I would call and let Tricare know what your situation is.  They will either fix you up with someone to see there or tell you to go to an Urgent Care.

Yeah, that's the plan.  I'm hoping for at least an urgent care...  that would _hopefully_ be faster than an ER.  An actual appointment at a clinic would be _golden_, but I doubt I'll get that...

You can try and call the clinic in your area and see if they have availability at the weekend clinic.  Call Tricare in the morning and they can authorized you for your new area (same if you are traveling).

Wait...  there are clinics that have _weekend_ hours?!  Holy crap!  That would be so cool!  (so far I haven't seen weekends at a normal MTF, but it's worth a shot...)

  • Absolutely they will see you.  You just need to call and register yourself at the new MTF--they won't have your info, obviously.  Then call the appointment line, and tell them you don't have a PCM yet.  They probably won't assign you one yet (until you DH signs in and specifies whether you want a male or female), but you can just see whoever is available.  I've had to do this a couple of times.

P.S.  I think this only works if you are Prime (but I'm not certain).
