Nothing went right today -- long unfortunate story

So the last step before we move is tiling the bathroom floor. I really wanted to get that done today because it has to sit for 24 hours before you can walk on it, and obviously we are going to need to shower in the next few days...

So I started out with a razor scraper that I bought to get the old nasty linoleum off the bathroom floor. That was working rather well, and I got to the point where I needed to removed the toilet to get the linoleum under there.

I go to shut off the water to the toilet but even with the valve tightened all the way down, the water doesn't shut off.  So knowing that I *have* to get the toilet up I just decided to shut off the water to the whole house. So I tighten the main valve all the way down, and it's still not 100% off. Before I found out that it still wasn't off, I had disconnected the hose so now there was water all over the floor, which mixed with the old tar-like glue and made this smelly nasty mess.

I kept the water off on the upstairs by running the kitchen sink, that despite the fact that the WATER WAS OFF had a steady trickle. So I get that under control and go to take off the toilet. I didn't have the right size socket to take the tank off, and they're too tight and gunked over to get off with a wrench, so I have to take the whole thing and lift it and put it in our tub. UGH!!! I was finishing off the linoleum when the razor scraper slipped and I punched the screws that hold the toilet to the floor. I took a good chunk out of my knuckle and I think I'm going to get some horrible diseased infection now.

Ok, so I got all the linoleum up, the toilet is up and in the tub, I'm ready to go putting down the backer board. I grab this stuff from the basement and carry it up to the second floor. If you don't know, backer board is made from CONCRETE and is very heavy (we were using the 1/2" stuff). I got it into the bathroom but then my hand cramped and I dropped it, and in an effort to save it from the floor, I dropped the edge on the top of my foot... and I was barefoot. That's gonna leave a mark...

After swearing profusely I got back to the task at hand. The first sheet can be laid down and fits without needing to be cut. Unfortunately, around that one sheet are all sorts of crazy shapes. Of course my tub can't have a flat front, and of course the built in cabinet has to have weird molding running down the corners. I cut some cardboard to use as a template for the weird shapes and was going to cut the backer board. Now, when we cut the 1/4" stuff for my backsplash, it was nice and easy to cut, just score it a couple times with a box cutter and easy peasy lemon squeezy it would break cleanly. NOT THIS STUFF! I tried scoring it, I tried this little saw thing my dad let me borrow (which would lock up) and a hand saw, and the stuff would not be cut through. I tried breaking it off where I scored it, and it just broke, like drywall would, with no rhyme or reason.

So I'm texting my dad to ask for suggestions and talking to my husband on the phone and getting so frustrated I'm about to burst into tears, all the while the kitchen sink is running so the water doesn't make it up to the second floor.

By the time DH got off work I was in such a bad mood that I wanted him to catch on fire for not being there to help me all day, even though he was at work, and I planned to do it myself and it was totally irrational. So per my dad's suggestion I asked him to stop by Home Depot to pick up a cap for the plumbing for the toilet so we can turn the water back on to the house.

He gets to the house and I'm sitting on the floor of the basement putting together my Ikea furniture, because that is way less stressful. He keeps asking me what I want to do, what I want him to do, etc etc when I just wanted to be LEFT ALONE cause I was so pissed off at the world. So he goes up to the bedroom to investigate the situation.

I went up a couple minutes later and he's using the hand saw on the board "see, this is exactly how you do it," being all condescending, which again, made me wish he would catch on fire, when using the hand saw will get you an inch every 5 minutes, and I told him that, and he was talking to me like I am retarded and should have known how to do it- psh.

I go downstairs, finish the little 2-drawer nightstand I was putting together. I was in the process of bringing it from the basement, to our bedroom and he was there and asked if he could help me. I was so exhausted that I welcomed the help and let him take it up for me. HE RAN IT INTO MY PANTRY DOOR!!!!! There's a gauge in the pantry door, and the corner of the nightstand is bent. *murdermurdermurdermurder*

At that point I had had it- I left the house to come back to the apartment and DH went to his parents to borrow a saw to finish the board (the only thing that kept me from killing him). I took a 45 minute long shower to get all the nasty tar off of me and now I am drinking coffee and watching the Beauty and the Beast 80s tv show on Netflix.

  • That sucks that you had so much trouble doing what you thought would be a relatively easy project. :-( It totally sounds like a National Lampoon's kind of day. Here's hoping that rest of the bathroom renovation is as "easy peasy" as you thought it would be in the first place! :-)
