I posted on D&R but I got a lackluster response. We are thinking of getting a convertible crib (that turns into a toddler bed and then a full size bed) with furniture to match (either in white or espresso color). I have gotten a luke warm response when I mention convertible crib to a few people. Most people tell me its not a good idea. But what do you do with a regular crib once you are done with the crib stage for all kids? (other than a tag sale) I figured this would be our daughters furniture for her until she moved out.
on a side note- growing up I had a hand-me down crib and my sister and I had bunk beds (that can be seperated into 2 twin beds) my mom still has them. We were never offered to pick out our furniture as we got older- so I am not sure if I would offer that to my children.
Do you think convertible cribs are a waste? Would you get one? Do you plan on letting your kids pick out new furniture when they get older?
Re: can we talk cribs?
I bought a convertible crib for Jack. We will be buying all pieces from it for his room as he grows up. It will be a full size bed and his. If it "crap outs" before he goes to college we'll discuss new stuff. Otherwise I plan on it being his.
For Charlotte since she will be sharing with Jack she ONLY will have a crib now. It is convertible to a TWIN because we are doing a mini crib. Then when we move she will either get a whole new set for her room or use MY STUFF from when I was in 8th grade, I used the stuff for 5 years and it has sat in storage and was $$$ so reusing would be nice.
My crib was used by my brother, sister and then 3 other babies. I shared a room and has a twin bed then bunk beds. I picked my own stuff in 8th grade though when I got my own room for the 1st time ever. So I did have a choice of that growing up but it was mainly because we moved and separated rooms.
We bought a convertible crib, dresser and chest for the baby. Honestly, the decision was price driven b/c of coupons and sales at BRU. They let me combine a 30, 20 and 10% off on all 3 pieces, so the price difference b/w a regular and convertible crib was negligible. TBH, we may never end up converting the crib since a full bed will fit tightly in the room as the baby grows, but it's nice to have the option. We can also use it for the next baby. One kid will get this set, the other will prob get something from Bob's.
My DS had a convertible crib and we used it until his big boy bed and the only reason we didn't is because I bought the wrong size bed. his is a full and I bought a twin. We bought a whole furniture set so I wanted something that he could use as long as it stays nice.
My only suggestion if you buy a convertible crib is buy the kit when you buy the crib and store it. You never know when a company will discontinue your set and then you will not be able to buy the parts.
The crib we bought for Teaghan only converts to a toddler bed.
We looked into ones that converted thinking it would be her furniture as she grew up but then we thought about it and figured we wanted another baby so either way we would be buying more furniture whether it be when Teaghan out grows her current and that gets passed down or whether she kept her furniture and we bought new for another baby. I never really found a set I loved that converted so thats how we ended up with the one that goes to a toddler bed only.
We got a convertible crib that converts to a full bed. I personally think its the way to go. Since we didnt know what he was, we got white. I'd advise against that. White sucks. He chewed the paint of the sides (I got a cover for it but the damage was done in one night) and it just looks worn faster.
I thought white was great so I could mix and match other pieces with it. It doesnt match. Oh well. He has crappy dressers from Ikea that we plan on replacing with nicer stuff when he gets little older.

We have a convertible crib. But since we plan to have #2 by the time A would need the toddler bed we will have to buy A a new bed and keep the crib a crib for #2. when #2 gets old enough for a bed we will convert it then.
Why did people on the D&R board advise against it?
Oh, and in terms of color...if your kid chews on the crib the paint will come off no matter what color it is, unless maybe you choose a natural wood color? I have friends who have both white and espresso cribs and the paint chips on both if they chew it and they end up with either white or espresso colored faces. LOL Thanksfully A never chews her crib. We have white.
We have a convertable crib for A and considering that we are about to convert it to the final stage - full size bed (he's grown too tall for the toddler bed, sniff) you could say that I'm a big fan of them. I would do it again for the next baby. We bought a dark wood color and am extremelly happy with it. I didn't want to do white because I figured the baby would end up drawing on it or chewing it off, etc and with a darker color any of that would probably get covered up more. Plus I liked the darker wood better anyway. There's pics in my bio of our set (am running out the door or would go get them & PIP for you).
GL with your shopping!!

As for the babies chewing on the crib put up protectors early.
I have had them on forever it seems. I have 1 tiny bite mark (still pissed) because I put it in the wash and it wasn't ready by the time he went for a nap. I also used fabric ones because the sides of my crib are thick. HTH
A convertible is nice but I read in baby bargains it's not worth the price difference. If you plan on having more kids you'd either have to buy another crib or buy a new bed for the first child and give the old one to the previous baby. Either way you have to buy more furniture.
I'd buy a non convertible and put the extra $$ aside for something else. But then again we're using the crib my 20yr old sister had as a baby, and yes it is in evil drop side crib.
LB is in her convertible. We bought the changing table & dresser to match. We absolutely plan on converting it and it will grow with her.
For the new little bean, we will most likely do the same thing. We have a beautiful dresser that is in storage so I will just buy a cherry convertible crib to match and use LB's changing table.
I dont know why people would be against it, we love ours!
